{}I had my first interest in the H-body in '77. There was a guy that went to my HS that used to cruise in a 75 Vega wagon with a 350. I was still quite naive and innocent at the time, but with some knowledge of cars, and thought "WOW. Did he put that in himself? That seems like alot of motor for that little car." Whenever the car sat between cruises it had alot of attention. Later that year my future-to-be-exwifes father bought her a 75 TC after her other car had been wrecked. The TC was stock. Had a 305 and auto. It was silver w/ a black vinyl top. Maybe someone remembers the days when GM didn't prep the car right or used the wrong paint, but when we washed the car, at the car wash, the paint would blow off. Even after that I thought that was a neat little car. One day, before we were married, we got into this huge fight and she took off in the Monza. I tried to keep up with her in my 72 Duster w/ a 318. "I can catch her my engine is bigger" Riiight! At 120 mph she was still pulling away. At that moment I knew that someday I was going to own one of these cars. And now I do. And, oh by the way, I never caught up to her that day. I backed off, with my tail between my legs and great deal of humility. Before I head into the present let me give a little tidbit----Did you know that back then GM designed the car, at least the Monza, so you could tune-up the car by just washing the engine? Wow! Cool! WTF? What an idiot. Her dad told us this. C'mon. Even I knew THAT wasn't possible, SHeesh! Just thought you might get a kick outa that. I did-still do.
Anyway, later in 81 we fell on hard times. With two kids and only one income we decided to sell the TC and keep the Duster. Duster was bigger and easier to haul kids. I painted the car red and it promptly sold to guy on base. Which in turn he very promptly put in a ditch. Good-bye Monza-it went to the bone yard. RIP silver surfer.
Now...while I was living in Phoenix, lived there for about 19 years, my wife made friends w/ a gal whose husband had a 77 Monza 2+2, yellow in color. Stock 305 w/ TH350. This car had been sitting in their back yard for at least 12 years. I know that for a fact. I told Chris one day "if you ever want to sell this car look me up first". Later on he had a buddy of his that had a land yacht (76 Caprice) that had been sitting in front of the apt. for about a year and had to get rid of it or pay for the removal. He called Chris and Chris took it. Chris later removed the engine and tranny and scrapped the rest of the car. He needed to put the Monza back on the road as they needed transportaion for her for work. He rebuilt the engine (350) in his carport. He installed the cam w/ a hammer. Yes, I said, a hammer. It wouldn't go in so he used "persuasion". After that he was having problems w/ the crank turning easily, so he removed the new crank bearings one at time and replaced them with the old bearing until he found the culprit. It happened to be the thrust bearing, so he replaced the new w/ the old and everything was good. They drove the car for a while until they felt it was time to sell the Monza-hard times again for them. He put it up for sell and didn't even contact me. He started at $2600.00. Got some interest, but nothing solid. I stopped by his house one day and saw it up for sell. What the...? "Why didn't you tell me?" All I got was a shrug of the shoulders. I bought the car for $1800.00 and took it home and since I had JUST rebuilt the motor (355) in my truck I set out to swap the two engines. No way did I want that engine in my Monza. I swapped the engines and sold him the truck for $1200.00, thus $600.00. The car is a true AZ car, the only real rust is around the hatch hinges and that is at a minimum.Earlier on he(Chris) had a truck that blew the motor or something and he took the motor out of the Monza and put it in the truck and then later sold the truck---with all the Monza specific parts. I had to make part of a pwr steering bracket for the pump and the pan had to be modified. I wanted to have a good running ride so I had the tranny rebuilt. Chris helped w/ that, he knew someone w/ a tranny shop and that guy rebuilt the TH350 for $250.00. He went over to pick up the tranny for me and got mad at the guy because the guy wasn't going to include a new torque converter w/ the rebuild. Chris left so angry he didn't bother to check to see if ALL the tranny was there. As he was leaving the owners dad came running out "...STOP! STOP! I think you might need this." Some how they had "forgotten" to install the tail housing. That would have made driving a little difficult. Drove it daily for about 6 months. Shortly after this I was driving down boneyard road and noticed a Starfire that seemed to have just been pulled in. I stopped and asked about it and soon had it in my back yard. I stripped many parts off of it. Some of these parts I have sold to members here and some parts I still have. The car had a V6 and I have all the AC components. I tell you what, though, if I knew then what I know now that whole car would have came w/me. I could strip off many more rust free parts for you guys. Oh well. C'est la vie.
Soon after that, about July 2003, I decided to move to Omaha, NE. Thats another story. I have driven the car here for a very short time. It has never seen snow or rain since I have owned it. It has now been sitting for about 5 years. I have only so much time during the year to work on it-winters are brutal here. The body work is edging closer. Hopefully this year the body work will be complete. I had to replace one fender because someone got mad one day and punched the fender REAL hard. Other than that it is mostly door dings. Chris had used the car as a moving van so there were some fairly good dents in the rear. I know it doesn't sound like much, but I want it as close to perfect as I can get and since I have time I will take my time. I have to be satisfied and I am OK w/ the length of time it is taking. I have made some modifications to it that I will post soon.
