TH350 has to come out for a quick rebuild and to replace the front main seal.

What's the best way to support the engine while I re and re the tranny?

In the past I've always pulled engine and tranny together but not this time.

Thanks

Put a piece of wood under the oil pan and use a jack. Putting the tranny in will be easier that way too because you can adjust the angle of the engine to line it up.

HEH thats funny. I was just under mine. Thinking about the samething. But I was taking measurement for a new trans mount for a 200r4 and that dang torque arm.

As for holding the engine up I got a old tripod
In the past, I used a chain and a 2x4 wraped in towels 2x4 laying on the fenders. I don't think the thin skin of my sunbird can handle that.( GRINS)

If it's a SBC you may want to remove the dist cap so it doesn't hit the firewall incase the engine does angle back a bit.

remember the bolt

Postby MIKESMONZA on Wed Mar 26, 2008 3:57 pm

You also should notice on the V8- and I would imagine the V6,,, ( correct me if wrong),,, the bolt's on the bellhousing of the tran's will not have a bolt in the hole above the ,,,Driverside  alighing dow pin's  On the 350 and larger trannsmission's it wiil be nearly imposible if you stab the engine and trans with the bolt in place and plan to drop it out from underneath,,so while reinstalling you have empty the hole,,,to consider,,, Mike

Mike, are you saying there are only 5 bell housing bolts on the V8? I had a V6 Monza long ago and swapped a V8 in it, I used all 6 bolts. It was a 4 speed. Later I swapped in a TH350 and also used all 6 bolts. I didn't have any trouble getting any in.

I've removed just the tranny before. Pain in the ass for sure. Just had to lean the engine back enough to get the bolts out, since clearance is tight and they won't just back straight out. From there, since I don't have a lift or anything, it was just basically me benchpressing that damned thing up there! I'll tell ya what, after 30 minutes of that crap I was sore for the next week! lol

As far as supporting the engine w/o a trans, I don't know since I've only removed the trans right before I pulled the engine from the side. I only did it that way since I didn't want to pull the hood off, so I pulled the engine from the side.

Spyder,, The bolt can be put in while the motor is tilted, but un less you have "no" clearance problemns and can start a bolt,,,, do it , but some sbc engine's like 262 originaly from the factory had a bolt missing or installed but genaraly it is left out on a lot of models maybe after GM warranty repair on the trans,,,I have not personaly tried,,even with the 3/8Th's inch drive "wigler extension,,,or finger's meathod and hand as big as mine could be the problemn on starting the bolt,, My distrib cap removed and the dist base against te firewall we could not start the bolt,,Damn 75 larger tranny tunnel ,, LOL,, Mike

putting in tranny bolts

Postby chevyart on Fri Mar 28, 2008 11:29 pm

I have the same problem with my 67 nova drag car. I use a bolt in that one spot that is just long enough, amd wiggle it in from up top to just get it started and then use a special offset open end wrench to tighten it not really that hard after you do it once. Maybe I wont be so happy when I do my 75 v8 vega with 350 turbo. itsm happening soon and ill let you guys know chevy art
