Oil pan choices

Postby Brianp » Thu Jun 21, 2018 1:46 pm

Dropping a 1962 283 Corvette motor in a 75 Vega. Looking for recommendations on who makes an oil pan that will fit without any modifications. Any help would be appreciated. Brian

Some people are like slinkies. They serve absolutely no useful purpose, but still put a smile on your face when pushed down a flight of stairs.

75Monz, I'm far from being fully versed on this but I think you are correct that would work as long as he is running headers and not stock exhaust manifolds. I would assume he is going with headers but as far a I know if you want to run stock Monza exhaust manifolds you need to use the stock oil pan that has the dip stick going through a hole in the side of the oil pan. I also have a set of 80's stock GM exhaust manifolds that were donated to me by a guy who was dropping V8's into Monza's and Vega's a few years back and he told me they will fit in the Monza engine bay and give better access to the plugs but I have not tried them and are not sure what GM they are off of. I could get the casting numbers if anyone is interested. The manifolds are in my car somewhere and I can't test fit them as my motor is out of the car.

Couldn't remember if the last 'vette 283 I had was left or right hand stick. If you use stock monza manifolds, you could use a clearanced pan like that, put a plug in the stock block stick hole, then weld a tube port in the side of the pan where you can fit the stick up through okay. Another option that might be worth checking on is the reverse sump pans you could get for the old Chevy II's doing a v-8 conversion, sort of like this one. https://www.classicindustries.com/produ ... 23621.html
Never actually tried one on a vega or monza, but done that to 3 of my past Chevy II's and worked great.

Thanks for the info. The dipstick is on the left side of the block and would like to stay with that setup. It has been bored to the 302 setup with 71 LT1 heads. I will be using Sanderson shorty headers. Just wanted to make sure that I won't have to have the pan modified.
