External Electric Fuel Pump recommendation.

Postby MonzaMikeV8 » Wed Sep 11, 2024 10:23 am

Hi,

The recommended fuel pressure for a stock 2 barrel V8 (according to the Vega and Monza Service Manual) is 7 to 8 1/2 PSI. I'm not sure what external fuel pump I should be using going forward as I'm not sure how it works with the pressures. Do I need to find a pump that operates exactly between 7 to 8 1/2 PSI
e.g. the chevy electric fuel pump 6472657 has a range of 6 to 9 PSI. Does that work or is it already out of range ? How about a pump that has 4 to 11 PSI ? Even more out of range or still ok ?

Can you please let me know what to look for ?

Thanks,
Mike

You could add a pressure regulator inline

Mike,

I have been through this several times. External (the car was originally a 4 cyl with an engine driven pump.) Later, I found a sender and fuel pump assembly for the tank. I had it assembled by S.U.R. R. in Akron Ohio. The pump was a Carter which was attached to the sender and fuel tank assembly.

When I used the external pump I mounted it on the rear of the rear seat panel under the car near the fuel line. It was very noisey and vibrated. I also used an underhood adjustable pressure regulator to maintain a constant pressure to the Edelbrock 4-barrel.

I now have both. An in the tank Carter (Bosch) and an external mounted near the rear fuel line. Also, a fuel filter in the line at this location. If I have a fuel pump failure, all I need to do is switch a fuel line and a single power lead to the external pump. I am thinking of piping both into a "Y" near the fuel line behind the rear seat. Then adding an underdash switch labeled "Main" and Auxilliary". That way the swap could be done in the car rather than under the car.

Hope this helps,

Bill

I'm unable to use an in tank pump as the bracket where the pump is usually attached to is gone missing. My actual question is if you can recommend a certain external pump that has worked great for you in the past.
I am aware that I can use a pressure regulator but my question is if I already need one if I was about to buy a pump with a max pressure of 9psi where 8 1/2 PSI is recommended ?

I have looked at several pumps but cannot decide which one fits a stock 2 barrel V8 Monza best:

First there's all of the "micro solenoid pumps" like the Edelbrock universal micro (38 GPH, 4-7PSI) or the Holly Mighty Mite (32 GPH, 4-7 PSI) - Are these already sufficient for this application ?
Or should i rather go with a rotary vane pump like a Carter P4594 (50GPH, 5-9PSI) or Carter P4600 (50GPH, 4.5 to 8PSI) ?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

I don't think the brand matters much or the design - as long as it delivers the required pressure and GPH fuel flow. You are feeding a 2BBL Carb which is the minimum required.

I would mount the pump behind the rear seat on a 1/4" pad of rubber. Drill the rubber piece to match the back of the mount on the pump. That should help isolate the vibration/noise from the pump.

I did experiment with mounting one under the hood. That worked also, finding enough mounting space can be a problem.

Good luck!

Running a Edelbrock 17301 on a stock 305 4bbl.
Have several thousand miles on it so far with no issues and no regulator needed.
