motor mounts/shims

Postby joe350gt » Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:22 pm

This may sound stupid but when you put in shims to get a motor to sit a little higher just where do you put them? Here is my problem. My motor does this shaking thing from side to side when it's idling in gear. At any rpm driving it's fine. I figured hey, let's put some new motor mounts on it. So I got some and a buddy of mine who works at a garage put them in for me. He told me it sat a little lower with the new mounts so he shimmed in up. Anyway, my motor shaking is still happening. So today I do some checking and I find shims between the frame rails and the frame adapters. For some reason I was thinking they would be between the motor mounts and the motor. My friend usually knows what he's doing, he's a fellow gearhead but on this one I'm not so sure. So you guys tell me, where do they usually go?? BTW, this is in my '72 Vega...

Thanks in advance,

Joe

That's not where I would put them. I would put them between the motor mounts and the frame plates. Simple to cut out of flat stock and drill that way, easier to install/change/add to, and I would think more solid.

Do you have factory-style mounts? The same reason those sag would also cause the engine to vibrate...weak rubber.

I believe it was DjTy that posted an article he received that showed a relatively simple mod to the stock mounts to turn them into Bob Gumm-style mounts, using the '66 truck rubbers. A bit of welding is required, but they look good.

Reid,
Is that a stock V8 Monza frame-side mount that the tutorial uses? If I can find out which mount that is I can have a set of V8 mounts done probably this weekend for DjTy.

It appears to be the stock engine mount, so I would have to assume it uses a stock engine frame plate.

I would buy the truck mounts first, and get a thickness measurement to compare to the plans. Then just cut off that amount, + the thickness of the plate you'l be welding back on. I wouldn't try to make them any taller...just stock height. Adding a shim later if necessary would be easier than making them shorter. :D

Looks like a really nice modification. Quite a bit cheaper than Bob's mounts, if you are handy with a welder.

These are the mounts I'd build for DjTy. Do you have a set of stock mounts kicking around that you could get me a stock sized height on?

I don't have any V8 mount plates, just the Hooker style that I'm using on my LT1.

'72 Vega with '93 Camaro LT1/M29 T56/12 bolt 3.31. 16" IROCs all around. Sanderson headers into duals with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. It's loud but at least it's faster than your grandma's Buick. pwned.

I don't have any stockers any more. If no one gets back to you first, send Clyde a PM. I sold him a set of NOS mounts about a year ago. Maybe he still has them.

I am the person who done this tutorial.

Yes, i've used my sagged stock mount to build new one. Each one take about an our to make. Fits perfect when i'm put my enginge back. It have now been in car since middle of April, and i'm very pleased with the mounts :D

Another good example of 'HotRodder Resourcefulness' when parts are scarce. Nice drawing, Thomas.

motor mounts

Postby joe350gt » Tue Jul 04, 2006 4:00 pm

Hey All,

After reading thru the posts and checking the pics I don't have the same setup as far as my mounts. Bolted to my frame rails are angled pieces that are maybe 5 " that go forward and then the motor mounts bolt to them, then to the motor. But after fighting with it some more yesterday I'm starting to suspect maybe my torque converter or trans is part of the problem. It's a 700R4 with a 2300 stall. My cam recommends more like a 2800 stall. But with the lower 1st gear (3.06) in the 700 I seem to remember that the stall could be somewhat lower. It only shakes when I'm stopped or almost stopped in gear. Driving down the road it's fine which makes me wonder about the converter. I know it's driving me crazy as well as causing my Sanderson header to get beat up by the steerinf column. I'm using an off the shelf motor mount for a '60s Chevy pickup truck , brand new so I don't think it's an issue with the rubber. I'll look and get a p/n for it as well as take a few pictures. I keep telling myself at least it's not an internal engine issue but it is a pain in the @ZZ for sure.

Happy 4th to all,

Joe
