shell gas now claiming no gunk build up.

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Tue Mar 06, 2007 5:40 pm

I just saw a comercial from shell gas. They claim that there gas has been formulated to not cause that gunky build-up on valves.

Do you believe it?

Does anyone know of a gas that dosent cause this buildup?

Every engine I've dissassembled (all were high milage daily driver motors) have terrible amounts of crud on top of the valve...

This has to kill performance....any way to rid a motor of this stuff short of a valve job?

well according to Chevron, their gas does not do that. I have actually seen an ad for them comparing a normal valve and a "chevron" valve don't know if it is accurate though.

Amoco gold was supposed to be the highest detergent fuel sold. Read many independent tests that confirm it as such.

That is correct about Amoco fuel. It is one reason why BP still uses Amoco fuel five years after the merger BP/Amoco merger. (Of course, there are merger reasons, also.) I used to work for Amoco and I read all of the studies about Amoco gasoline. It is a good product that does what it claims.

I used Shell gas in my vega and my wife's car a few years ago and figured out real fast that I could smell the cars from 20 feet away.
Arco brand gas did the same thing. Another thing about the Arco gas is that I think it is to blame for eating the gaskets/seals in my carb.
Freakin' nasty smell would fill the interior of the car as well.

I switched to Chevron exclusively and now none of my cars stink!

Just what I have experienced.

Fuel in the carb is vaporizing. Especially common with open element air cleaners.

Wow, interesting to hear about all the different gas stations out there.

I havent seen an Arco gas station since the 80's. Same with Chevron!

There's actually no shell gas stations that I know of around here.

Maybe one Gulf. A hand full of exxons.
next up probably BP and kwik fill

then Citgo. (my fav).

The rest are all Sunoco, Mobil, Hess.

There are Arco's here with the AM/PM's in AZ, but I've stopped going to those stores years ago when everyone I went to was owned by some unfriendly middle-easterner who gave the evil glare as you entered the store.

But I use Mobil/Chevron, and QT gas. Any word on the quality of QT gas? I like there stores a lot, so I end up using them the most anyways.

QT gas?

Is it owned by the girls from your pics?....they were a couple of QT's for sure :)

Theres a 711 on the way to work like the AM/PM's u mentioned.
I just cant see stopping in there.
I gotta go put up with cranky customers for 8 hours, so I'm pretty particular about getting decent customer service. Not a snack nazi.

An angry glare and a scary environment doesnt cut it with me.

No thanks, I'll go to an A-plus.

With SO MANY gas company/station names out there, It kind of makes you wonder......
Who is the mother company of what stations?
When you go to another station, are you really going to a competitor station or is it owned by the same company?
Hmmmmmmmm :?

I'm so used to calling it QT, I probably should have called it by it's full name. QuikTrip is the place. And no it's not owned by the bikini babes.

Amoco purchased ARCO in '98 or '99. This buyout was brought about because of the quality of ARCO's gasoline and the oil and gas fields that ARCO owned.
Amoco and BP merged back in '00.
So, BP owns Amoco and ARCO.

Most third party convenience stores (privately owned and operated) and some of the top name conveniece stores team up with one of the major gas brands, i.e - 7-11 and CITGO.

You may not even know that you are purchasing
AMOCO or CITGO gas because it is not advertised as such on the pumps or signage.

Even AMOCO would use an off brand of gas (that met their quality standards) if they had an emergency run on their distribution centers. When I ran an AMOCO, once they sent me an off brand tanker to fill my tanks just to keep me operating.
