fiberglass parts

Postby patrick1151 » Fri Feb 08, 2008 11:59 am

I know someone who has been making fiberglass front and back valances for the early Vega's for years. I am talking to him about expanding what he is making to include other parts. I would like some feedback from everyone as to what they would like to see produced. He is not really interested in making large parts like doors and fenders due to space and shipping but if the was a demand for fenders this could change.

Currently we have the following parts that we can use to make molds.

Astre Formula rear spoiler(not sure if this will also fit a Vega)
Astre Formula Chin spoiler/air deflector(again Vega?)
Vega early upper Valance
Astre/Vega early Fenders
Monza fenders
Monza spoiler ends

Parts I would like to borrow or aquire to make molds

A straight Monza Spoiler center piece
Monza chin Spoiler

He is now having to charge $225.00 shipped for the Vega rear two piece valance the front is around $200.00. As the parts are coming from Canada, the shipping is a big part of the cost. I would like to know if we started making the Monza spoiler for example, what would people be willing to pay for quality parts as well.

I know some of these parts can be purchased else where but the person who would be making these parts makes fiberglass parts for a living and does quality work from what I have seen.

I am not expecting hundreds of orders for parts but I would like to know if we could get molds made and then parts made for a reasonable price, what kind of interest is there in these parts?

I'd love to have another Astre rear spoiler; they certainly will fit on a Vega (had one on a '75 Cosworth) and I have always prefered that 3-piece look to the one-piece spoiler you usually see from Dobi/IECO ect. Given the auction costs of a 'real' Astre rear spoiler, I'd gladly pay a set cost, although we expect in-person delivery here in Seattle for a nominal beer fee.

I would hope the quality would be as good as VegaMods stuff. Reproducing that kind of quality in the Astre/Monza lines would probably be a good seller.

I would order an Astre 3 piece spoiler to if the quality and fit is good. I like the looks better as well. Any price on them yet? May need a front valence for my Vega as well.

Monza Parts

Any chance of the rear body filler under the rear bumper for a Monza Spyder or 2+2? These injection molded parts distort over time and can't easily be brought into original shape. A fiberglass replacement would be very welcome.

Yeah, I'd go for a good quality Astre Formula 3-piece rear spoiler, too.
It will fit a Vega, too.

I have no idea what the costs to get the molds made but the spoilers for sure I want to pursue. Basically, at this point I am gauging interest and whether or not there is demand for these parts. I dont look to make money on any of the parts I sell but I do need to recover the costs. So the price of parts will reflect what I have to put out to have the molds made plus production costs. With the spoilers at least, I am pretty certain I could make a go of it here and on ebay but if there is not enough interest, I wont pursue it.

I would be interested in a replacement Astre Formula front chin spoiler. Mine are trashed. And I don't think that is an unreasonable price for a quality part.

I looked into producing the Astre spoiler further and the cost of the molds will be $500-$600 and a total cost of close to $1000 to reach production. This is just an estimate but likely close to reality. Production cost for each will likely be in the $200-$250 range for the three pieces. So if the start up costs run $1000 and just to pick a number, lets say 20 spoilers can be sold, $1000/20 so $50 each for start up costs. We would likely be talking in the $250-300 range for each spoiler plus shipping. Is this a realistic number for those who would be interested in a spoiler?
It seems like the interest is here for the spoilers so I will sit down with the person who would be making the spoilers this week and see where to go from here.
Time wise, I dont really know when we could have these in production by but I would like to see it happen by the end of the spring. I am willing to lay out the cash to get the molds made and production started so I will continue to pursue this. As for any other parts, it seems so far like the most interest is in the Astre spoiler so we will see where it goes from there.

BillB1210, I asked him about the filler part and he thinks it would be rather hard to make and not something he would be interested in tackling at this time.

I would love a 3 pc. 70s Camaro style rear spoiler like Hooker used to sell. The Astre spoiler looks too Pontiac for my Chevy.

I've NEVER heard ANYONE say that before. Most people talk about how the BOP models look so much like the Chevy models.
But I guess, "Dare to be Different" - sounds like a good reason to put one on my Vega GT and maybe my Cosworth Vega, too. Maybe, I'll paint "Trans AM" on the back of that spoiler, too.

Shannon,
The price is reasonable. But, I am only interested in a BOLT-ON spoiler. I am assuming that your supplier will be able to build fiberglass spoilers with the studs installed or provisions for them (an embedded nut or something).

I like that one, too. Is it even remotely possible to fit one of those on a Vega without a lot of work?
The ends would have to be cut and redone. Is the center section width about the same as a Vega hatch?

Res0o7eb, yes bolt on would be the plan. I have no idea if the Astre bolts would be the same for a Vega but it will be a direct copy.

there should be no difference between the vega and the astre as long as the spoiler is for a hatch car only difference in the hatch i think should be between the early cars and the later ones and that being the shape of the bottom lip of the hatch(it dips down a bit between the tail lights on the early cars) and that shouldent affect anything width of the hatch and the quarter panelsshould be the same where the spoiler goes a monza body style would be different. and yes definitely need it to be a bolt on!
