ive been watching a friend build his fiero/lambo diablo conversion and wondered how would this work in a vega? find the year of your choice andbackhalf it from the front seats backbuild a chassis for it and install a rip snorting small block in the back seat area and run it thru a 700hp porshe transaxle? there are already adaptors for the engine to trans match remote water pumps pretty much all the stuff needed is made by a company called DESERT HYBRIDS in tucson arizona! what do you think boys? any brave souls out there? DARE TO BE DIFFERENT ! what do you think the front to rear weight bias would work out to be? im going to take a measurement off my buddys lambo conversion to see how long the combo is from the front of the motor to the drive axles just for the hell of it to see if theres a chance it might fit heck i think you might even still have some space in the hatch for some luggage lol!

Remember the ebay early Vega that was cut into a truck? It was read. Had a Corvair transaxle and the SBC sitting mid-car.
Can't remember what or if it sold for.

It was commented on quite a bit.

It would be cool to see for sure.

But if it were me, I'd do it to a Monza... a Corvair Monza that is! I like the later Corvairs, and it's a lot of work to do it to a Corvair, a Vega would be a ton of work.

An interesting concept that would take some substantial fabrication. Unfortunately I don't think it will work. Back in the 60's a gentleman by the name of Ted Trevor designed a kit to put a SBC in the back seat of late model Corvairs, there are still a few around today. The front of the engine ended up just behind the front seats. Why won't it work in a h-body? The Corvair had a 110 inch wheelbase, h-bodies have a 97 inch wheelbase, that's the reason. A Porsche transaxle would keep the engine longitudinal. If you stretched the h-body wheelbase to make it fit, what is it going to look like with a stretched body, the car's proportion would be wrecked! What you could do to come up with a mid-engined h-body is use the rear from the Fiero, still a lot of fabrication but the body panels could be stock. A place north of Chicago, V8 Archie, has sold over 3000 kits that adapt SBC's to the Fiero transaxle, making the engine mounting horizontal. The engine fits snuggly in the Fiero's 93.5 inch wheelbase, which would let it fit nicely in the backseat of any h-body. This is a workable combination that would give roughly a 40 to 60 weight distribution front to rear.

I like it!

Dick

Edit: While I was two finger typing my response, several others got ahead of me!

I've seen information that a late model Corvette trans axle can be used for mid engine cars. I've always loved those mid engine Corvairs. Had a GM Performance parts book that had a mid engine kit. To me there's only one car that could be freakier then a Tunneled ram mid engine Corvair Manza. An LS7 Corvette 6spd trans axle mid engine Corvair.

a hatchback was what i had in mind matt be real cool to look in the back window and see a small block chevy sitting in the back seay ! 8) since the motor is in the middle of the car you can now take out the stock front crossmember replace it with the design of your choice chop the rad cradle as big as you want get the biggest rad in there that you can and run the tubing from the rad down the trans hump to the motor keep the battery in the front probably run air conditioning and mount a gas tank down low in the old engine bay! run your air conditioning compressor off one side of the crank and the alt off the other you could probably use the lines for the air from a fiero too!
