fuel filter question...

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Tue Jul 11, 2006 6:11 pm

My black 79 has been tempermental lately.

One of its i'lls being the desire to start puttering out while driving.

Waiting for a sec, with the key on..for the fuel bowl to fill and it would run again.

I recently replaced a dead intank fuel pump with an old used one I had laying around.

I suspected that maybe it to was going weak.

Afterwork I suddenly had the idea of replacing the fuel filter which isnt to old, but I have a new one in the trunk.

I realized I had useable tools with me and a rag...and I went ahead and popped the hood and did a little work, right there in the parking lot.

after a few minutes I had a clean looking fuel filter in my hand, but tear it open and presto! covered with grit!

I put the new one in and she didnt show any signs of running the fuel bowl empty at superhighway speeds (3.42 gears/3500rpm for @ 45min)
So that was cool. and quick.

- Also my gas tank was very clean inside metal wise, and there was no grit to be seen just a few days ago when I changed the pump.

Here's my Q's..

1 is there a carburated Fbody pump '82/'83
that will interchange or bolt to the stock tank unit.
Or any pump that interchanges?

2....the black thingy in the fuel filter (spring loaded 1 way valve)

seems really restrictive...does eveybody run one?

will fuel bowl run empty after shut off without it?

The only Q? I can help/assure you with is there is NO WAY the bowl(s) of a carb will empty by not having a check valve. The needle and seat are positioned above the bowl for that very reason. BUT, a check valve will guarantee that there's always pressure in front of the pump. I have always put filters before an external pump to keep debris out of the pump as well. I imagine that the in-tank FBody type you're checkng on would have a pre-filter (sock-like) as well to keep out large particles.

And per the title, I thought you were picking on AMC's too!

Lol, I'm gonna change the title, i can see what you guys mean.

I still have yet to have the day when I can pull up to a light with a hot rod mustang II or 304 gremlin to race.

Thanks for the info.
