The RR was running at 150F at the hub while the LF, RF, LR were all running at 105F under normal cruising. The brake rotor's hub was so hot you couldn't even get your hand close, but the outer edge of the rotor and the axle tube weren't that warm. We actually think it had to do with the wheel bearing and/or the brake caliper on the RR corner more than anything, not the rear end itself. We are in the process of replacing the wheel bearings and checking over the brake calipers and brackets to see if we can find the issue.

That was what we were thinking. The rear rotors both have SMALL wear marks, like half the width of the rotor, so we know they aren't touching the whole rotor so we sort of checked stuck caliper off our list, although it might go back on. We're now leaning towards twisted bracket or bad wheel bearing, last I checked in with the techs.

All 4 rotors go out tonight for turning so we'll see if that helps any once it's back together.


Yeah. Free chassis but $19k for shipping LOL. Actually it would be like $21k for shipping with the actual shipping added LOL. The chassis are a heck of a deal for all you get as a roller though. They are such a great starting platform.

Sounds like a dry bearing to me. If the caliper was sticky the rotor would be hot all the way to the edge. That and the fact that you don't have full pad contact lead me in that direction.

Are those sealed bearings on that rearend?

No, they are not sealed. The S10 bearing uses the rear axle as the inner race and an external seal on the outside of them. Both of them looked ok when we removed them, but looks can be deceiving.

The axle housing could be warped from when the control arm brackets were welded on. The lower control arm bracket is right near the bearing. The bearing could also have been damaged from the welding heat. Also if the welding ground was attached to the axle shaft then the bearing could have began welding itself to the axle shaft.

We have both bearings out, and should have the new ones in later today. Hopefully we won't have any more weird noises or high temps.

Both new bearings and new seals are in. Just waiting for the rotors to come back so we can re-assemble it and take it for a cruise next week. I'll post an update then if no one asks any questions before then.

Can we get to see some shots of the undercarriage and give us some info on the suspension upgrades and alignment settings? I assume you guys do your own alignments in the shop, I am trying to find a good place to take my Monza for some custom settings not just "to spec" as most places want to do. I met Jeff at the Muscle car show in Rosemont and sold you guys some NOS parts for the Vega. I hate dealing with some of these local shops (Firestone, Goodyear, etc) who really aren't into old cars. Chuck Larsen and I also have known each other for many years from doing car shows around the area and he speaks highly of you guys.
