I have heard that someone put a Pontiac OHC-6 in their Astre.
I don't remember what modifications were made other than to the hood to clear the cam cover.
If it was at all feasible, I would do that swap. I own a 69 Firebird with the factory hipo version of the OHC-6 in it called the Sprint.

I saw a Mustang II with a Ford inline 6 in it one time, it wasn't pretty,

Back in the mid eighties I owned a 72 vega panel that while I was deployed my Dad put a straight six in it (he said he was bored  ) it almost fit (a little firewall massage) and the hood closed fine I had some pic of it some where but haven't seen them in years . as for the car itself the gentleman that ended up withit died about 3 years ago and his kids sent it to the crusher since it was just an "old Vega" :bang:

I saw one back in 2000 when I was still active in the Inliners Club, I was racing my 69 Firebird Sprint with them at Brandimere in Denver, as a matter of fact I was knocked out by it in the 1/4 finals!!!! We were grudge match racing against a Ford Flathead Club, and Believe it or not my Firebird was classed as a Late Model, and if the 74/75 Vega had not shown up it would have been the newest car there, as there was a 68 Nova. But with the 4-71 blower the Vega was running, it was definatly not a street car!!!

Here are a few shots of my Bird, I don't see how anyone could but a OHC-6 in a Vega/Astre Chassis unless it was a track car only, the engine is to tall to fit under a 2nd Gen Firebirds hood, let alone a Vega.

Hey, CammerJeff,

Thanks for the pics.
I owned a 68 Firebird hardtop, OHC-6, auto and a 68 Firebird Convetible Sprint, OHC-6, 4-speed.
This was back in 1978 and 79.
What a S-M-O-O-T-H engine, even at idle!
It winds up very quickly, too.
I agree, it would be very difficult to fit a Poncho OHC-6 into a 1st or 2nd gen H-Body without serious surgery to the hood.
There might be other problems nderneath.
It is a very tall engine.

Yes, I had a friend with one, and always wondered why it wasn't more prevelant. It was really an awsome engine. Thought of putting one in a Nova or an old Chevy, still think it would be a good idea. I have no idea if one would fit in any of the H's but I bet it would really run and handle.

Nice Firebird. I just put a new cover on my Firebird - yes it's outside behind the garage. :(
I am firing it up this weekend for the first time in a while.
If I ever pull the V-6 out of my Astre, I'll test fit a spare OHC-6 in it. 8)

As you may know, the Pontiac OHC-6 was John Z. DeLoreans idea when he was at Pontiac.
The rubber cam belt was an innovative design that proved very reliable.
We all know, 'cause we drive 'em without any problems.

So, the Vega 140 cu. in. SOHC engine got a rubber cam belt, too.

If you stop and think about it, the BEST setup is a timing belt, even for the SBC, ala Jesel belt drives, 8)
They are extremely accurate, transfer very little in the way of harmonics and spark scatter, and are rather easy to provide for cam timing adjustments. Win, win, win, 8) The only drawback, IMHO, is the reduced service life compared to a double roller chain, but that's really not that big a deal. 8)

For me? Or res0o7eb? I wouldn't compare a Stang II to a Monza at all, but the 78 "Cobra" was a pretty cool looking car, I can picture one Pro Streeted with a Chevy drivetrain in it, , I'd drive it.
