GMPP LS Oil Pan - Fits Monza/Vega well

Postby 454spyder » Thu Jan 06, 2011 3:28 pm

FYI for those of you considering an LS motor swap.

The GMPP Muscle Car oil pan fits pretty nicely and even has a notch that fit great for tie rod clearance. I mounted the engine with about 1/4" clearance above the centerlink. Almost like someone was thinking about the H-body folks?

Those notches look pretty far back on the pan, and it looks pretty tall. Didn't you have to move your engine forward, and up higher to get that pan to work, and then you had to remote mount your electric water pump because there was no way it would fit behind the radiator fan? How much ground clearance do you have after raising the engine up?
Not trying to sound like an A-hole, but I think that pan creates more problems than it solves. :(

Does that have the oil filter mount or does it have to be remote mounted. I know it's a tight fit with the center link, tierods and the back of the crossmember. I had the Autokraft pan and had the motor set back about 3/4" and had to raise it about 3/4". I had the rack on but converted it back to stock steering. before I sold it and it worked great. I agree, more pics.

Here is a picture of the rack. Note that the rack is very close to the same height as the center link. Motor is set back 3/4" and raised 3/4". Autokraft pan has the oil filter adapter on it. This makes it easier without relocating the oil filter.

Here are pics from the passenger side with the engine installed using a GMPP "Muscle Car" oil pan. It fits just about perfect. I would like to do a rack and pinion conversion someday, but this works great for now.

Hey Leroy,

Nobody thinks your an A-Hole! i appreciate your comments, but the pan would have worked with the original engine location as well.

I didn't move my engine forward because of the oil pan. As you can see from the pictures, there was plenty of room to move the engine further back and still have the inner tie rod fit in the pan's notch. I mounted the engine 1" forward in order to not have it super-close to the firewall.

As it turns out, I CAN fit an electric water pump just fine, but I like the remote mount setup cause I like to actually see the front of the motor and cause its just different.

Digging up an old thread.....

Any idea if the the H3 5.3 oil pan (GM Muscle Car pan) will fit and work with the LS engine in the stock SBC V8 position (in order to retain the torque arm and the TH350)?

When I get around to working on my car that is the pan I am going to use. This is the cheapest I can find it.

Here is a link to a thread I wrote mainly for myself to catalog various ideas regarding an ls swap.

You are starting with a v8 car so I would just use the stock frame mounts and stands. The oil pan should clear the steering. The factory positions the engine to the passenger side so that notch in the pan should help out with tie rod clearance on passenger side of pan with steering at full lock. I would use a cts-v accessory drive minus the ac and buy/build a bracket to mount the alternator on the top passenger side.
