I believe they are Ford bolt pattern instead of the normal GM pattern.

I'm not a know it all with sticks, but I think the T-5 trans was the same between Ford and Chevy, just with different bell housings to bolt up to the correct motor.

ROB,

I'm running a 1991 IROC T5. It bolted up to a Monza V8 bell housing with a small modification. The bolt holes in the transmission needed to be enlarged very slightly to accept the standard holes in the bell. I believe I had to "notch" the adjustment screw hole slightly for clutch adjustment hex nut. The front spline is GM "fine" - so you will need a "fine splined" clutch disc. I believe these are the only changes other than the shifter location - which can be a problem with the parking brake lever.

I used an S-10 tailshaft which moved the shifter around 10" forward to clear the parking brake handle. Since it was moved this far forward, I needed to extend the shifter some inches back to center it on the console. I finally used a Mustang GT shifter with an S-10 base to make it all work. Lots of "trial and error".

Works great now. The overdrive 5th makes it all worthwhile. The V6 Camaro transmissions have about a .80:1 overdrive, the V8's have a .62:1 overdrive. At 70 MPH the .62 overdrive has the engine at high idle at that speed depending on the rear axle ratio.

Good luck, IMO the best thing I ever did with my Monza. It makes it drivable at highway speeds.

Bill

I am using a T-5 from a Mustang bolted up to my Buick bellhousing using an adapter plate. The Mustanf trans has a longer input shaft that the GM version, too. The Ford units are better than the GM ones. They only used WC T-5 for a select number of F bodies. The rest were non-WC.

The IROC had a "World Class" T5. They are a little hard to find but have a much higher torque rating than the non-WC models.

Can I use the Ford T 5 WC out of a GT and use the GM Bell Housing?

Mine has a mechanical speedometer, the transmission case has a build date of 1/91 inscribed on it.

Yes, this what i am doing. I am going to use an adapter. Wilcap makes good ones from my research.

They aren't cheap (seriously not cheap) but factoring in the ease, the swapping of input shafts and such... time and dollars ahead.

All,

If the Ford variant of the T5 is better, bring it on! I agree with DrCAS that if it works and it is a WC T5, it might be worth the extra to make it work with your bell housing. The WC T5 has a torque rating of around 300# pounds if I remember correctly. That is still a little light for a high performance 350 or 383. These can generate 400# pounds of torque very easily.

Every time I "get into" my WC T5 behind my ZZII crate engine (345HP 395 # pounds of torque), I wonder who will win this battle - Borg Warner or Chevrolet! Always hope it doesnt "scatter".

Your driving habits and other factors may determine your final decision!

Look, if 300 lbs of torque isn't enough or you insist of running some mega horsepower engine on the street, then the factory T-5 is not the transmission for you. You will need to step up to a better transmission and that means going to a Tremac TKO or similar. If you want to play like a big boy then be prepared to pay like one, too.

World Class didn't come out until 1989. Save your pennies, make a few dollars and get a real transmission: T56.

Then again, I'm biased. :woohoo:

BTW: T56 swap can be done for less than $1,200, guys. Less if you're savvy.
