I'm surprised it has metric hardware but I really don't know if the hardware was changed to metric before production ended. What is on the '78-80 cars of other members on this board?

I've started to restaurate my Buick Skyhawk, wanted to do the wheelarches (?) at first, but found some more unpleasant rust in the back of the rear wheelhouse. One of the previous owners "repaired" it with a metalsheet, that probably was cut from anothe h-body OR is a buyed part - i can't tell. However there is almost no space left between the backwall and the tire, my finger barely fits...

The question is, if the rear part of the wheelhouse is carrying some weight or if it is just a dirtwall for the differential? In the last case would be a handcrafted sheet to fit the cut-out hole the easy solution. Please tell me I am right...

I am not sure what part you think was replaced but that bracing looks stock to me, minus the rust holes of course.
GM was switching to metric fasteners in the late 70's.

That "J" shaped panel is a structural panel but some have replaced it with a heavier gauged flat panel. This maintains structural strength and also gives you more room (especially for rear disc brake calipers).

Thanks for the Reports!

Strange thing is, that it looks completely different, but original on the other side. The thicker panel leaves almost no space for the tire...

What would you recommend? I was thinking of cutting it out and replace it with a 2mm panel...

I don't wanna sell the car in that condition!

As for your "HiJackers" those are not made anymore from what I have found, so you would have to watch eBay for someone wishing to get rid of some unwanted parts :( Harry
