New Member .... New Car... 75' Vega

Postby greenezombie » Sat Jul 06, 2013 3:42 am

picking up my first vega Sunday

1975 Vega (base model) 4cyl. 4speed,hatchback

told it's a stock "lime green" straight body

I haven't seen in person yet, set up a trade (in it $500) driving 198 miles to get it....then trailing it back home.

owner purchased as a driver but with a leaking rear main. pulled motor ordered parts/painted some.... then it sat for unkown amount of years

things I know I need:

Windshield, front seats or atleast new vinyl (good frames just bad vinyl, foam is questionable)I'd really like a retro lowback buckets ??? possible rear seat

told all the interior plastic's are super nice :)

minor rust spot near hatch.... no other rust

I would like a set of chev rally wheels with beauty rings (may have to convert to 5lug ???)

my plan is to have a 4cyl. 4 speed daily driver, would like to beef up the 4cyl just a bit on the cheap.

any suggestions and or resources/info is appreciated, thanks

Thanks Ron!

Well after 6+ hours on the road and just 7 miles from Canada I got her home.

Got the slime pressure washed off and what we have is:

Nice plastics all the way around inside kick panels too, straight body, good floors, good seat frames, good light lenses, good exterior window trim.

Con's: needs windshield, door and hatch weather striping are toast, drivers seat foam is bad (all need upholstered) , rust bubbles and a couple holes at the very back edge of hatchback, .......
the one thing that looks like a lot of work is the rusted out battery box, but more importantly the frame beam under it, from the motor mount forward to the bumper is nearly rusted away 1/2 of it anyway.

It IS a re-paint from what I see as the firewall is a dark green, but at some point in history someone removed the front clip all the interior and glass and painted it the "Lime green" had new carpet w/padding and was obviously a ride someone was proud of but..... carpet is trashed up front, and the paint is failing all around SOooooooo...........

anyone have a website link I can check vin for color and orig equipment it came with?

I like the green but in a re-paint I think I will go with an alike color with HEAVY flake, and since I'm a fan of the grandma style green-on-green I'll do a dark green upholstery and carpet, but this is going to be a winter/nickle-dime project, guess I should start with that section of frame and the hatch rust.

I am going to need a complete engine gasket kit.... are those available anywhere? also windshields?

will get ya some updated pics here in a bit. :P

Looking at your door jams and inner door panels, I would venture to say that your car is wearing its original color, introduced midyear. What is the color code on the plate under the hood?

lookin like it was originally brown

thought ya'll might like to see a video of it.

I accept criticism and suggestions / comments... also need ideas to clear up my speedo lens as it's yellowed and foggy, I tried some fine rubbing compound and made zero difference

Great video but,

The brown paint that you show around the rear hatchback is actually the red oxide primer these cars were dipped in.
Your plate indicates paint code 47 (Lime Green) is actually the original color of the car. The “Lime Green”, “Light Blue” code 40, and possibly a few others were non-metallic pastel colors offered at mid-year. Most of these cars were bone stock with color keyed GT wheels as standard equipment. Don’t know if these Vega’s were a special edition, regional or just a sales promotion to appeal to more women.
These colors could also have been had on any personally ordered, optioned up Vega including the GT. Those GT wheels were also color keyed.
Being late introduced colors, they can only be found on few 76-color charts. Those colors were not used on any 76. “Lime Green” became “Lime Metallic” code 45 for 1976. ”Light Blue” was reintroduced for 1977.

To determine what the rest of what that plate under the hood can tell you, go to:
