Pontiac"Safari" from a nomad?

Postby lleelduo » Fri Mar 21, 2014 7:22 pm

I had a fellow tell me he knows were a nomad is in a yard near here. What do you all think of a 1978 Pontiac Sunbird "SAFARI" safari wagon. Just thinking!

I remember seeing a '56 (? I think) Safari, and that was 1 cool looking car, so if you can score the parts (or that whole car) for a good price and can do a mock up, I think it might just be the coolest H-Body that never was! I'm intrigued. Harry

What made me think of it is that i had a 1955 Pontiac Starcheif hearse. Great party car. It had a cool chrome strip that started at the base of the windshield and angled down the front door. It ran all the way down the quarter. I have been talking to a body guy I work with and he said he could paint on that same "chrome" strip. could be neat.

Here's a pic I took at the Russo & Steele auction in Scottsdale; the Pontiac version of the Nomad only shares the roof and doors; everything else is uniquely Pontiac.

Spence I can't believe you didn't bring her home that is so Unique and Accepted at the same time. I am told by the guy that owned the one that was local that his (the one I seen in person) wasn't worth the cost of re-chroming the bright parts ($18,000 > $20,000 not that it needed that) he never keeps cars for long, so he sold it to someone that just had to have it and as so often the case smacked it up! :( I think that is one of the rarest cars I have ever seen, and sharp as well. I just bought the roof rack, rear spoiler and all the Nomad panels and moldings and trim from a guy in northern california. Looks like the "Safari" project is a Go!

Well alright Larry,
The funny deal is if these cars are not unique and rare already we figure out a way to go one step further. A car no one has ever seen and will never see again. Now that's a conversation piece on several levels. Namely, you will be in the same boat I'm in trying to explain the origin of your car when very few even know what your creation is based on. Such is the H-Body line.

Did the Safari have a script emblem like the Nomad?

Cool idea Larry.

I have the original "Safari" script emblem from the back of the car. I found 2 more on ebay that match. I striped the paint off them and repainted the satin black background area. I will post a pics soon. My NOMAD parts should arrive friday! Then the fun begins!

No, but my wife said the same thing. "All you need now is a surf board". I have a feeling one may come my way for a birthday or some such thing. Too bad, Indiana does not have many places to use one. :th: My new theme song may have to be"Surfing Safari" by the Beach Boys
