Monza rear spoiler update....with new pics 11/8/14

Postby cjbiagi » Thu Jul 31, 2014 5:11 pm

I am working on a fiberglass rear spoiler that I purchased some time back. It was made by A and A Specialties and while it is nice that it is fiberglass unfortunately the fit at the ends of the hatch left a bit to be desired. I am wondering if it is the same size as a factory one. Can someone measure the rear spoiler and tell me the height and width of a stock one? I am looking for how tall it is and how far up the hatch it goes from the rear edge. Thanks ......

Clyde,

Mine's 5-1/4" up the back and 4-1/2 tall.

Clyde I bought a new one back in '83 and it was/is about a quarter of an inch shorter than the hatch width, I can take some measurements when I get back if you need. Harry

I have been doing a lot of filling on the spoiler to get the contour perfect and it does also seem to be a little short as you mentioned. It's going to have to be right before I actually decide to install it and I am also going to have to work on the end pieces to get everything lined up. I am not going to put it on if it fits crappy, I would rather not have it at all than have an ill fitting one. I have the center section fitting pretty well right now although I may have to lengthen it slightly as you pointed out. That seems to be the problem with most fiberglass parts, they need a lot of work to fit properly.....

Wow Clyde, after almost 40 years of ownership, you're actually thinking of adding a rear spoiler now? I figured your car, as it sits, was what made it uniquely yours - factory color... no spoiler... original owner. Don't get me wrong, I love how the spoiler looks on an H07... I'm just surprised to hear you considering it. :)

I have actually considered it several times over the years. I purchased several factory spoilers and one was even a NOS one. The thing that always scared me was the way those things get wavy, even the NOS one wasn't perfect and I am not putting on a wavy spoiler. So, every time I had one I ended up selling it. I was always sorry I never bought a DOBI fiberglass one and then they stopped making them and gave up the H body business I guess. I found this fiberglass one earlier this year and figured I would see how this one was. The fit is not that good but I figured I could work it and get it to fit the contour of the hatch without having to flex it or anything. So, that is what I have done. I don't think this will have the wave issue like the urethane ones. I am not totally committed to it yet as I have not drilled any holes
However it does look promising, I now have to see how far off the end pieces will be and how much work those will take to line up perfectly with the main piece. I know they will need work too but as you mentioned I have already gone 40 years without it so a little while longer won't hurt.

Don't be sorry. Many years ago I bought a dobi rear spoiler and put it on my wife's Monza. I had to do a lot of modifications to the end pieces to get them to even come close to fitting. :(

Well that's good to know I guess. Seems to be common with aftermarket fiberglass parts.... :(

Clyde, are these pictures helpful? The spoiler stops about 1/8" from the edge of the hatch on both sides.

Thanks, yes the one I have seems a little short in overall length as well, not sure what I am going to do about that yet or why they make them short.

Mine was put on at the factory. I don't know if when it was new if it was flush with the edge of the hatch or not. Maybe over the 40 years it has shrunk, perhaps that's one of the causes of the waviness in the thin edge.

It looks good as long as both sides are equally off or pretty close, IMO anyway..I like the look of a spoiler myself and ordered one for my car about a week ago, after drilling the first hole you should be fine.. :th:

Clyde, do you need some pictures or measurements from your old NOS spoiler?
