Chip Sealed!

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Sun Sep 07, 2014 10:46 am

I don't know if they do this where you live.. but a cheap way to avoid repaving a road is do what they call a "chip seal"

You'll see the signs that say (fresh oil/ loose stone). They apply some kind of goo on the road then smother it with tiny chassis destroying stone pebbles.

The troubles for cars range from paint chips, to piles of stones hidden in every frame crevice. It's been maybe 4 days since they applied the final stone layer...

And what do you know I have a whole day to go play at storage... do I dare take the spyder down the road?

It Sucks:

In Dallas they use this on rural roads and less traveled roads. There is a couple in my area and I avoid them like the plague with any vehicle.

I think the "official" name is macadam. The only pavement on most roads where I lived in the 60s and 70s. Tar and gravel is what was used around here.

They oil and chip our county roads about every 2 years , I only got a 1/4 mile to the state hwy so I can deal with it . Takes a good weak or 2 for the chips to get all worked into the oil or sent to the edge of the road . I think I was in either North or South Dakota and they did the Interstate with oil and p gravel talk about hard on paint and how would you like to be on a bike and come up on something like that , be kinda hard on the knuckles and face wouldn't it .

They do that where I live also, the road looks nice when all the cars steam roll the stones in..but drive slowly and you should be fine.

Don't think they do that up here anymore. I remember the "shower" sound of tiny rocks jumping off of the tire and clinging to everything. That sucks man!
