Astre safari questions

Postby rhyolite » Sat Sep 20, 2014 6:30 pm

Hey guys,

Got some small questions about my new safari.

The woodgrain is gone, but after some fidling around with the trims its obvious it should be a woodie.
All the trim are in the trunk and i have no clue on how they should be attached to the car. There are small rivets on the panels so my guess is they have something
to do with it :) But were they glued on the panels? I looked into my hayes manual and the astre service manual, but that was a dead-end.
Is there somewhere on the internet some sort of manual how to install (or remove) these things?

Again on the woodgrain, the woodtexture is removed, was the woodtexture some sort of board/panel attached to the rivets? Or was is some sort of vinyl sticked to
the car like decals/pinstriping? Any help on restoring the woodie look would be highly appreciated.

Final question (for now :) )
There are 2 holes in my driverside A-pilar. They look factory made, on bigger hole in the lower section, a smaller one higher up.
My best guess would be a radio antenna, the car isn't equiped with the windshield antenna. But i can't find anything on the net.
Any thoughts ? Picture below :)

Thanks for any input !!

I would Suspect the A piller holes are from an aftermarket or dealer installed antenna, as for how the wood trim attaches I am sorry I can not help with that one.

Sorry I can't help with the trim, but as for the "Wood Panelling" I can! Here is link for the 3M version that is currently available, and I may have another avenue as well. Let me know if you would like to see the other ones, but this is the quality of the OEM stuff built for the OEM companies the other one is not the same stuff (vinyl wrap). Tiemen
The moldings are held on by plastic clips that slide over the pins. I do not see a part number on them.

Thank for input :)

@jeff.
Also my thoughts, it looked factory, but after some double checking and trying to find any info on a factory installed antenna in that particular spot, after seemed
like a dead end. So probably dealer installed. Well have to find a creative solution for it.

@Harry
Thanks, that was exactly what i was looking for, although the prices ... damn ... I think i'll try to get a high resolution picture of the woodgrain somewhere or a sample
and have it reproduced it here in NL :)

@cos2482
Yeah !!! I have none of those, so i couldn't figure it out :) but thanks to your pictures,this makes completely sense !!
The next challenge will be finding a consideable amount of those, or a couple of samples so i can have them 3D printed and reproduced.
Too bad there isn't a partnumber on it.

If anyone has more info on the plastic woody molding clips, please let me know ! :)

Thnks again ! this is why this board rulez ! :)

There's a user on eBay selling what appear to be these same clips, used:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vega-GT-Lower-Molding-Trim-Clips-Clip-/151270208258?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2338683302&vxp=mtr

There aren't any dimensions for the clip posted that I can see.
Not sure about overseas shipping though, he doesn't say.
Not sure about the price either, Clyde might be able to find new ones for the same!

Tiemen,
The clips for the wood trim are smaller than the clips that fasten the lower chrome and black GT moldings.
You will also need to find a few of the even smaller clips that attach the lower horizontal wood trim at the bottom edge of the tailgate.
Below is a photo showing a lower GT molding clip on the left and the two clips sizes that you need for the wood trim on the right.
The larger of the wood trim clips measure approx. 3/4", the smaller clip is about 5/16". The large lower GT molding clip that you don't need is around 1-1/8".

Thanks once again for all te input, think i got what i needed.

One more question for Jim :
The larger of the wood trim clips measure approx. 3/4"

Clyde is trying to get some of those clips, he actually found some already (damn, the man is good :) )
I measured my trims, and the inner size looks to be approx. 1" . You measured the clips to be 3/4" ... is that including
the little "wings/flaps" ? or just the main piece of "triangular" shaped plastic? Or i'm I measuring it wrong?
Clyde found the clips measuring 3/4" .. but because i need 65 of them, we need to be sure that they are the correct size :)

Thanks guys :)

Greets,

Tiemen,
Getting tired of pulling my wagon molding off! LOL
The molding inside itself looks to be just sly of 1", There should be no difference between the Vega Astre woody moldings.
I believe the wood decal was different. (Walnut vs. Mahogany) A few of my molding pieces were loose from parking lot dings so I just gently palm squeezed them a little narrower.
I did have a few of these extra molding clips years ago when the wagon was sideswiped but I have not been able to find them.
If anybody can find these clips, it will be Clyde.
Below is a better view of the measurements, widest point, wings about 15/16", attachment about 3/4"
Good luck!
