1st gen camaro fuel tank into a '72 wagon

Postby nutt » Thu Sep 25, 2014 1:33 pm

Does anyone have experience converting your orig. vega tank to a 1st gen Camaro tank? I think the size will work very nicely. The Camaro tank measures 46x21x7 or so and will squeeze in there with the spar tire well removed. I guess my main question is whether the filler neck is the correct curvature and length to work with my '72. I'm having no luck with finding an original tank and honestly think a new Camaro tank will be the ticket since it's new and larger capacity.

I'm quite certain that some has done this swap but I can't for the life of me remember who.
I seem to remember that the swap was done on an early hatchback.
Someone with a better memory will chime in, that I am sure of :) .

I think Waybad did this to his Vega. Check the Project Journals or maybe try this link:

I remember seeing a rear shot of a BW vega sporting what I thought was a chevelle tank. After measuring it out, I figured it had to be an early Camaro tank. Anyway, it seems to fit the rear area so I'm going to investigate the filler neck and either modify or just get lucky as is.

Great! Sounds like the only mod to the tank is to shorten the filler neck by 1.5" Other than the usual hack-a-panel to clear the way to the left, a simple day's work. This vega has more nicks and tucks than the late Miss Rivers.
I just ordered the tank and 3/8" sender from Summit, Spectra tank, OER sender, shipped for $192. :th:

I did it and it works great, I bought the tank mounting braces for the trunk pan, it's some work but worth it for me.

The 69 Camaro tank has the long inlet tube needed for under the bumper location on 71 to 73 Vega's.
67 and 68 have the filler cap above the bumper so the inlet tubes on those are too short.

Okay, finally completed the gas tank and coated the car in a new shade of red. All in all, a pretty simple fix considering the other crazy stuff I've done to this car. Only needed to flatten the tire well and add a hump to give room for the sender lead. I purchased the '69 Camaro sender with the single 3/8 line which will work well for any upgrades in hp later on. I decided not to modify the filler neck, it's tight but should work fine. I did add 1/2" of foam for spacers to cushion it against the deck.
