Hood latch cable broken on 75 Vega

Postby Cudda » Tue Nov 11, 2014 9:23 am

This is what led me to find this site. My 75 Cosworth Vega hood latch cable snapped. I searched the net and found a post from Jan. 1, 2010 by Vegastre. I was not able to pull up heis pics, but his great description of the GM tool to get the hood open enabled me to fabricate the tool well enough to pop the hood. I used a 1/4" steel rod to make the tool. The original post listed a 5/16" Rod which was too large to slip through the vents on my 75. It took a little fannageling to hit the G spot but when I did it opened easily. Here are a few pics. Thanks Vegastre. Cudda

Thanks for pics. I always thought....what if cable broke?
I'm gonna make one these tools now while the hood works fine, then I will have it.... incase.
which means, i'll never need it. :D

I have two of these tools I've bent up over the years; one is made from a trunk tension rod(1/4" diameter spring steel), and the other is made from the tapered stainless shaft of a car antenna. They both work well. The trick is to make them short enough to fit in the glove box. "Don't leave home without it".
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

I had to make the tool for my 71 when I first bought it as the cable snapped , at the time the local GM Dealer could get the cable new but that was about 18 years back . Makes me wonder how I built that car without this little internet thing !
