Exhaust going together on 78 Sunbird.

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Sun Dec 07, 2014 9:32 am

This was a thread about needing a hard to find, ball end exhaust adapter.

Turns out, I had what I needed all along. I had a 'test-pipe' that was set for straight cat. converters as used on 4 cyl models. A pretty hard to find piece.

If I cut it in half, I would have what I needed....so I cut it. Now, once that's inserted into the flex pipe that's been squashed on one end to fit over the end of the engines oval shaped Y pipe, It will be able to bolt right up to the cat back pipe. My last hurdle is getting the cat back pipe over the rear axle. It has a nice cherry bomb muffler attached to it, that doesn't want to come off of there.

Getting that separated will be fun, but at least it's been pried off a few other times already. Once I get the exhaust buttoned up...it's a complete running driving car. It'll need a lot of stuff, but running and driving is a big step. That makes it worthy of being put on the road.

So, finally some good news for my 'birthday built' Formula Sunbird. It's been sitting waiting for some attention for years now..

Thanks Heinz for the link! worth saving.

Summit has them, just cut the expanded part of the tube off.

or if you need both sides the Summit brand can be had in 2.25" O.D. with a band clamp.
