speedo replacement

Postby robson » Mon Dec 08, 2014 9:19 pm

I have a 78 Monza Spyder and it has a malfunctioning speedo that show a max. speed of 80 mph. Is there another speedo from a Camaro ect, that would read 120 mph or more that would fit in my Monza without tearing up the dash? I know about the aftermarkets speedo's that are avail with dash modifications, thanks Charles. signal10@bellsouth.net

Sorry but I think I have bad news. I searched the old parts catalog no higher mph listed. the era of the gas shortage and 55 mph speedlimits dictated those things on all but the high performance corvette and camaro. the mounting is different so no interchange with othe models

Would a speedometer from a 75 Monza fit? I am pretty sure they read up to 120 mph.

76 and up US models were 85 mph, 75's had 100 in some models and 120 with the tach.
export models had 130 or 140 KPH

Be aware though that if you have a tach, the numbers on the 100 or 120 mph speedo might not match. I was having trouble with my tach and a different one came in a box of parts I got with the car so I swapped it out to see if it made a difference and it was a couple of days before I noticed the numbers were different.

Looks to me like the numbers on my second tach match the numbers on the 100 mph speedo in the top picture, it may mean that my second tach is from a '75 (I don't really know). That second pic above is really hard to see, but the numbers look like they match up to my speedo. Just sayin', you will want to take a good look at the numbers on the speedo if you have a tach (I am also going to assume that all Spyders came with tachs, but I've been known to make bad assumptions.

The '75 Town Coupe speedo's would be the same, the '75 hatchback's gauges are the same as Vega's.
