tired @ 75 K

Postby firebird77clone » Mon Jan 19, 2015 6:18 am

I got my 74 notchback with 35K original miles.

I've recently done two round trips ( 2 hrs. Plus one way ) to Atlanta; ave speed 80 mph.

Well, my dear daily driver is now at 75 K and has a definite skip st idle (#1) which gets worse with each Atlanta trip.

Looks like that Pontiac 301 sitting in the wings is getting closer to going in. Yes, it WILL be a conversation starter, and I can hear it now: "you put WHAT in it?"

Well, I'd love some part numbers for known good combos.

Needed: front springs rear springs, radiator, mufflers ( going dual exhaust ) and Anything else you KNOW I need.

Oh, and anyone know if the stock floor shifter will work on a BOP th350?

My guess is putting a Pontiac 301 in a H body you are going to need a lot of things. Engine mounts, frame mounts are first. You may also want to look at possible oil pan interference issues as even a SBC requires a special H body oil pan. I am sure it can be done but with anything new there are bound to be a lot of things pop up. Not sure how the width and height stack up compared to a SBC engine. Has anyone done this swap before?

That's an interesting thread, but no real information.

I'm expecting to fabricate frame mounts, trans mount, headders, exhaust.

modify driveshaft, oil pan, steering column, linkages.

I'll eliminate the electric fuel pump, and replace the mushy rubber fuel hose on the gas tank while I'm at it.

Springs, radiator, mufflers should be same for any v8 swap.

Like.... the Turbo version.... '80 & '81 . hahahaha... what a hoot that would be.
345 lb-ft torque... practically the same as the W72 400s and the 455s.... but the turbo motors make peak torque at 2800 rpm!!!!
No boost (yeah, right) and you get 20+ mpg.

I have an '81 and love it..... except for the fact it has an automatic trans. May soon be remedied with a T-5 or T-56 swap for some killer mpg with the factory 3.08 gearing. Just gotta find a 301 flywheel.

No turbo on this one, but I'm sure it will give more power than I'll need. Not looking to make money in the quarter mile, just want to keep it on the road, as my daily driver.
