Electric Choke

Postby monzapla » Mon Jan 19, 2015 10:36 pm

I just bought an Edelbrock 1406 carb with an electric choke. So far i'm really happy with the carb. I'm replacing a holley 750 DP, I decided to try and get better mpg and still have plenty of performance. So far I love it!! Just got back from a test drive and it really feels like I gained some horses and it's a lot smoother.

Any way, my question is: where is the best place to wire the choke into? I thought about hooking it to the red wire going into the distributor, But do I really want to chance of a voltage drop there because it feeds the dist. (hooking it straight to the batt. for test driving gets old).

Thanks

You can't wire it to the battery, you need a switched 12v source.

Tha'ts what I am saying (or asking), Is the Red wire (12V switched) @ the dist (HEI) a good wire to tap into?

A 75 Monza that came with HEI should have a 12g pink wire for power, and it should be fine to hook the electric choke to it. Or you could tap into the same size pink at the oil pressure switch.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't thought about the oil press sender.

Definitely NOT the HEI wire - it'll make the ignition do strange things.

Sorry, Chuck, but there's no problem with using the HEI ignition wire. It's basically right from the key switch, and plenty heavy to take a few extra amps of draw from an electric choke. Same with the pink wire on the oil pressure switch.
Now if someone were to put an HEI ignition in an older car that originally had points and didn't upgrade the OEM resistance wire, it would barely run to begin with, and the extra draw from the choke would no doubt cause havoc.

Tap into the Orange blower motor wire. Its orange and right out in the open. easy to get to. 12 switched. With mine...it's a little rigged but I didnt want to cut into the factory wiring so I just stripped the end of my wire long (@ 1") and fed it into the rubber plug end of the orange heater wire and jammed it onto it's connector at the blower motor. It's worked fine ever since and it blends in with the factory wiring.

The orange blower motor wire would work I guess, but only if you left the heater fan control switch on "high".........

I just got thru tearing apart an old 75 monza wiring loom, and the HEI and the oil pressure tie in together about 12" into the loom. So they basically they are the same I would think.

My mistake - that was the guy who hooked up his electric fans without a relay to the HEI wire.

Electric fans without relays can cause major havoc and/or fire. Single largest current draw in almost any vehicle. Often well over 30 amps each to start, and 20 A or so running. Loads of fun with a 60's or 70's car with a 37 Amp alternator.

I solved my problem. I made a 5" long "extension" wire with the correct connectors to plug in between the distributor and the pink feeder line and added a pig-tail w/connector for the electric choke. Looks & Works great.
