Does any have a v8 monza bellhousing laying around?

Postby yenko » Sun Feb 15, 2015 6:50 pm

Need a v8 monza bell housing. Also does anyone know for sure if a cosworth 4 speed fork is the same as the rest of the h bodies. I v been told the flywheel and clutch assy I have from a cosworth will work.
I have plenty of cosworth parts if some wants to trade for a. Bell housing

Hi Darell. I Look at your link. What casting number is on that bellhousing, doesn't look like a monza bell? And if you still have the cable what length is it. Thanks Bryan.

Hi Bryan That looks right to me, and Darrel has the even harder to find clutch cable cover attached to it. The Monza (and friends) has the fork/cable oriented down and to the left for clearance of something (Sorry I don't remember what, it has been about 25 years since I pulled one, either frame or exhaust). That cover doesn't show up very often on my eBay searches but bell housings do fairly frequently, prices and condition vary a pretty wide range. Based on what I have seen Darrell's price seems fair or better. Maybe Clyde can help with the ball and fork, they also come up on eBay from to time to time. I hope this Helps Harry

I do not have any ball studs on hand right now but I can get a NOS one for you if needed. I can generally also get a cable for you depending upon what style and length you need. If you have the early pedal setup with the pulley under the dash then the correct length for a V8 is 60" which I happen to have on ebay now. The 60" one can also replace the shorter 54" ones as long as it still uses the pulley. You will have a little more cable between the firewall and bellhousing but the length between the firewall and pedal is the critical part. Feel free to contact me and we can sort it out if you need to. cjbiagi@yahoo.com
The V8 bellhousing is 354496, the one used on the 4 cyl engines is 360162. The 4cyl one is often sold as a V8 one which is incorrect. It will work, the main difference is the V8 housing is missing one bolt hole on the drivers side for clearance.
Here is a link to the clutch cable. Below shows the difference between a V8 and 4 cyl housing

Clyde,
That 4 cylinder bell is for the Iron Duke, the Vega/Cosworth fork goes from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock and the bolt pattern to the block only fits the Vega engine,

Not sure which cable I need. I have a complete 75 cosworth doner car. Want to put that transmision , and pedals, and shifter in a 73 vega. I think that the cosworth cable may be to short to reach.

I don't have their length in front of me but the Cosworth cables are probably the longest available. They were brought forward to get as far away from the stock stainless header as possible and still had some problems getting too warm.

The 75 Cosworth cable was 66". Shouldn't really be necessary for a V8, the 60" should work. The 75 Cosworth should have the pulley under the dash.
Dick, thanks for correcting me on the bellhousing. I do know some had the fork coming out at the 9 o'clock position. What year was the iron duke made?

I think the Iron Duke was first offered in the '77 Astre and Sunbird, never in the Vega. Possibly the '78 Monza and up.

Does any one have experience with the clutch ball in the bell housing Would one out of the cosworth bell work in a v8 bell?

Yes, the clutch ball stud is the same. I do suggest using the shortest of the "short" throwout bearings to help maintain the best clutch fork geometry. There are slight differences in the length of short t/o bearings and using the shortest one helps with establish the best clutch fork angle especially with aftermarket pressure plates.

Didn't know there were diferent lengths on the throw out bearing. That's good to know!
Still trying to figure out what needs to be done to install the shifter from the cosworth car into the 73 auto car hopefully some one will chime in on that. Without seeing the tunnels in either car yet not sure if there the same , is just as simple as a bolt in deal or sectioning part of the 4speed tunnel into the 73 auto trans tunnel?
