s10 posi questions

Postby beakerztoyz » Sun Feb 22, 2015 1:20 pm

hey guys sorry to put these here but I figured I'd get some answers quicker, my car is an 80 sunbird.. stock rearend. there's an add online in my area for a guy selling a posi s10 rearend.. been on an off for the last few months, he just put it back on there and dropped the price a hundred bucks down to $250.

will the posi unit work with my existing gears?
I got the impression on here before that the s10 gears wont work without machining true? false?
how much power are you guys who've done the whole s10 thing running?
how wide of tires?
I been really on the fence on even contacting this guy because i kind of figure with my luck the posi wont bolt into my rearend, and then I'll end up doing work to put the axles in just to have 1 wheel get traction and then it would probably just break the rearend anyways so the whole thing would just be a waste of time and money.

A few things to consider, first their are 2 different posi carriers. One fits gears with a 3.08 and lower numerically, the other fits 3.23 and higher numerically. So, the carrier needs to match the gears that you are installing. There were also 2 different spline counts, 26 and 28. All H bodies used the 26 spline axles. S10's also used 26 spline up to sometime in the mid to late 80's, then they switched to 28. So, you need to make sure the spline count matches your axles. S10 gears need to have the pinion gear machined down to fit a H body rearend, no big deal but you need to be aware of that. JDRace is a active member here and can handle that for you as well as any other rearend work or parts.

You also want to make sure the axle is out of a 2WD, not a 4WD.

Dick

I should add the 4WD posi would be the gov-lock style which is more of a low speed posi, more for snow/mud conditions than laying some power down.

so if they are 28 spline axles they wont bolt straight in and I would have to use the s10 gears?

so I did contact this guy by email and I'm not even sure if its the same rearend as the 1 I assumed it was. The add just says its an s10 4.5 inch rearend ( Itook 4.5 to be the bolt pattern) said he doesnt know the gear ratio or any axle spline count just that he assumes its the standard one as he's not a mechanic. the add I saw after christmas for 1 said stuff about it having been rebuilt recently so i figured if it was this 1 the guy would know specs.

So anyways I got researching 95 s10 rearends online and found that some came with 8.5 inch rears geez I never knew s10s ever came with those.... any of y'all know what how new of an s10 rearend we can use in the 5 bolt conversion? (as in axles) heck for an 8.5 incher I'd have the brackets on it redone and bolt er all in by 98 I guess most of em had 8.5's or at least thats what i was reading
