GT wheel center repair

Postby ol55 » Sat Apr 25, 2015 3:55 pm

What is the best way to rejoin the two pieces of my GT wheel centers. Also the best way to keep them on the car. My Vette had wires for the rally caps. Do I need to do something like that or do they stay on?

Going to try JB weld even though I think brazing may be the best. Sanded surfaces, mixed JB, apply, then put in vice for 24 to 48 hours. Do they fly off or tend to stay put on the wheel?

Hi Larry when I was younger (Ok a lot) and I had a few get loose on the centre they would break as soon as you touched them, so what I did was "Pop rivet" them back on and then I would fill the "Chevy" emblem with a thick black paint until it was flush to hide the rivet. good replacements were available then but the $$$$$ not so much! So I suppose you could do the same and use a black filler or pigment in your JB Weld for the same effect if no other better ideas/solutions come your way. I doubt regular braze would work and would definitely trash the chrome but a low temp aluminum braze might work but I would expect the chrome to take a beating, just the same. Good tip, Harry-And I thought I was the only one that used to rivet them back together. lol. If you get the pieces REAL clean(a small sandblaster works great), the J-B Weld will work fine.

No go on the JB weld. Seemed to hold until I tried to install. The shock of hitting was too much. Could be not clean enough. Any other suggestions (really don't want to drill)?

I would reclean both sides real good with parts cleaner and rough them up throughly with coarse sandpaper and try again, sandwich enough epoxy between the 2 parts so that it there is more surface area being bonded.
Good luck
