Another wierd Sunbird "FOUND"

Postby Sunula66 » Sun Jul 26, 2015 10:12 am

Good Morning H-Body crew,
I'm heading out the door to pick up another Weird spec Sunbird! I'll be posting pics and will need the Marc connection to decifer the codes.
This one has been stored out here in the north east of Alberta on a farm 40 minutes from Cold Lake and 1/2 hour from my place. It's a coupe but has some very unusual features...
and was an original V-8 car 4 speed! As I need to get going here I'll leave you all with this invisionment.....it has factory spoilers, it's black with nice black vinyl buckets and the tail panel is the second one I've found out here made totally of metal! Holy Crapp! and I paid a" HUN" lol as I quote Freddo
....stay in suspense....Ron...
PS , I've seen it once in a rush and paid the folks for it...I'll go through it more extensively when I get home with it...there will be items for- sale and donation as the vehicle is pretty rough...

I'm putting the build sheet date 6-1 (1978). Just 7 days after the red spyder. 19XB is gonna take some research, but I'm pretty sure it was the code for the rear spoiler. 98 would be the special striping and gold will be the color. You'll find this code in the box labled "hydropeierce" on the buildsheet. box #55 IIRC. If it doesn't have that exact code it will say PF2 or PF3. Find the buildsheet as you may know, behind the passenger side plastic seatback, if the seat has one.

I think all of the coupe tail panels were made of metal, for the sunbird. It's the hatchback that was made of the urethane that disintegrates...

I wonder how a metal tail panel from a coupe would fit to a hatchback (with cutting of course)? Anyone ever try it?

I agree with you classic cruiser. I hav never seen a sunbird coupe with a plastic panel. I have owned two of them both with metal tail panels and I have seen at least 5 or 6 more over the years all with metal tail panels. As for making one fit a hatchback I've never seen it tried.

any chance you could post a bigger picture of that spoiler, I have a sunbird like that and would be interested to see what the factory spoiler looks like and cant see it great in that little picture. as for tail panels, if you mean the panel with the rear lights in it the one on my sunbird is metal too. great find

Hey beakerz,
can't seem to download a better pic from my phone but you guys are right, all these coupes have metal tail panels and I don't think the shape is quite the same but I'm willing to remove it and compare it to the plastic one. I'm still committed to getting the glass one from Doug in Michigan when he gets another one molded up for me. This bird was rough but has decent pieces here and there and the hood is a little out of shape but useable so a scoop can be installed. Extra steel rims are there but will never get used on mine so glass and other stuff will be available in the spring for anyone needing certain items. I'll make a list of items to get rid of and if ppl need it can call me. The car is at my house now and was saved from the scrap guy that was on his way to get it a few days later. saved it's shell ass lol The V-8 mounts and stuff are there and tranny is a weird one with no rings on the input shaft, not sure about rear gears yet either or ratio...nice door panels, good glass except front windshield and trunk rough but spoiler so so, couple trim rings, emblems etc...I'm keeping guage cluster and certain little stuff so we'll start to list what will be available. :th:

I'd be interested in the spoiler if you decide you don't want it , might even be interested in some more things on it too, kinda depends on how the budget is when you decide to get rid of some parts. anyways great find !
