Id'ING transmission

Postby MM71VegaDad » Sat Aug 22, 2015 9:40 pm

Hi! Picked up a decent 71 GT today to fix up. Trying to figure the trans it has. Has a buick v6 and a 4sp manual transmission. The shift pattern has reverse in upper left position. It needs clutch work, so want to start shopping. Anyone know what trans would bolt up to that v6 with that pattern?
Thanks!

You probably have a Saginaw, easiest way is to check the shift levers on the cover of the trans. Check the info here http://brianesser.com/technical-informa ... ification/

Is the Case Cast Iron or Aluminum, if it is cast iron 99% chance it is a Saginaw, Aluminum it is probably a Muncie or Borg Warner ST-10. But odds are the engine and trans came from a doner car so it will be a Saginaw as Clyde has already said,

Awesome, I'll climb under there and check. Previous owner had wrong bolts holding top of shifter to floorboard of car, causing whole shifter to wobble. ..reason I was able to negotiate price down...really hard to drive. Took it apart an hour ago and put right bolts in, 100 percent better and no more grinding. Still needs clutch I think, so going to go under and count side plate bolts. Thank you!
