Anyone Know What THIS is?

Postby bugdewde » Tue Apr 05, 2016 4:00 pm

Digging around in the back of the Kammback today. Found this "thought-to-be" air tank/compressor when I initially looked over the car in Oklahoma before buying it. Forgot about it, until today. Initially, thought it was for some Hi-Jacker air shocks or something in the past..........

It has "Delco Products Dayton Ohio USA" cast into it and a stamped number on one end "68-7"
There aren't any electrical connections, so I don't imagine it's a compressor.
Google isn't any help.

I found some possible air lines that were one the passenger side of the car and exited out the quarter panel drain (a whole 'nuther post...... )

Yeah.,. I figured as much. Thanks, Spence.
Just never saw any electrical connections..... puzzled me.
When I drew vacuum on the barbed nipple (with my mouth), I felt something moving inside. Curiosity got the better of me and I took it apart.
The bellows is good and the actuator actually moves back and forth when drawing vacuum on the barbed nipple.

So this thing is actuated by vacuum? All the way in the rear of the car. Hmmmmm......

I don't have air shocks, and doubt I ever will..... but I do have an early Vega trailer hitch that I want to mount on the wagon.... might come in handy if I get it working again.

These units can be found under the hood of Cadillacs from the 60's where they used engine vacuum to create a compressed air supply air to the rear load leveling air shocks. The unit had a single small black line with a splitter mounted near the rear axle to each shock. Never saw one of these units repurposed before. Had one on a 1967 Fleetwood Limo I once owned.

Pretty slick using vacuum to run a compressor. Kind of the opposite if the compressed air driven vacuum pump that I've seen used in the A/C service industry.
