H-bodies At The GM Heritage Center

Postby starfire » Sat Apr 16, 2016 11:27 pm

I went to the Heritage Center today. They had the #1 Vega and a Vega-based concept car on display this time. The concept car was very cool. Looks like it would have been a blast to drive. (I posted these on the H-body Facebook page too, but thought I should post them here as not everybody is on Facebook).

What was the "Alloy 8"? Aluminum body? I had seen the stainless steel Fords over the years

The really neat thing about the XP898 is that it's all plastic, except for the running gear and suspension.

Yes Dick, I noticed that I wonder if that was an idea that carried over to the Fierro? Also the rear window reminds me of the Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupes. I had noticed that a lot of the early concept cars had ideas that were picked up by all of the divisions of GM.

The first version of it had a very pointed nose and a chopped roof. I like the later one.

Interesting. Reminds me of a GM engineering exercise reported in Hot Rod Magazine in the '70s or early '80s, titled "Runnin' with the Devil". They had a Vega and installed an aluminum small block with a Duntov cam. I'll have to do some digging in boxes and see if I still have it.

I wonder if this could be the same engine?

Interesting...
Looking at the interior photo the carpet looked pretty dirty which is good because it must be getting driven now and again. Hmmm...I wonder if the steering wheel is all greased out and sticky from sitting? LOL Glad they eventually went with the Mini Camaro front end look rather than the slant nose. Forgetting all the bad press I think all of us here agree the first Gens where a homerun in design.
