Postby ol55 » Thu May 19, 2016 7:57 am

Looking at a very rusty parts car and trying to justify cost. How much is yhe scrap value of a hatchback?
Thanks,

I've scrapped hatchback shells (no engine, drivetrain or interior) at the local metals recycler before - got $25-35 for each.

The back half including roof, hood, fenders and doors (minus front half with drivetrain & rearend) got me about $40 about 10 years ago.... when scrap prices were high..... I think it was 1100 lbs.
Said I'd never scrap another.... wasn't worth loading it all up (by hand after saw-zalling all afternoon) and hauling to scrap yard.
I ended up GIVING many parts away from the remains of that car just for shipping costs to several needy members here. I felt that was more beneficial than scrapping the front half for a mere $20-30. Went for much better use to members here.
I wouldn't put much value on scrap price if I were you.

About 6 months ago, I sold 1000 # of clean metal scrap for $13.00 and change.
This was in Butler, PA,just north of Pittsburgh.
The price of scrap steel is not even near what it used to be.

Scrap metal is down in the past few years. The biggest buyer was China, and their economy has taken a little "dump" so did the value of scrap.
I remember about 20 years ago I had to pay to get rid of a rusty rolling shell what was left of a parts car 62 Impala, sometimes just to get rid of it is a good thing, getting paid is secondary

Thanks for the advice and information. The car is rusted to the point where the hatch glass is rusted out of the hatch, fenders half way up, etc. Hoping I could get at least $100 for the leftovers bit that does not look like the case.
