Vega Weight

Postby EVL VEGA » Tue Jun 07, 2016 1:03 pm

We have a public scale at a moving/trucking center near my house.
Decided to see what the car actually weighs. Was supposed to cost $10 but the lady just said.."get out of here..you're good..just remember the weight..nice car"
2780 lbs. Had about 4 gallons of gas in the cell. Stock curb weight for 73 Vega Hatchback was 2377lbs.
It's not as light as i was hoping but still pretty light for a street/strip car with all steel and real glass.

Anyone else weigh theirs?

I did the same thing last summer. My 75' Vega with s10 spindle swap, 9" ford, sbc 350, aluminum 15" wheels, aluminum bell and muncie, mine came in at 2950 lbs. I was definitely surprised, hoping for closer to 2600-2700 but its a full trim street car.

All steel street cars can indeed be a lot heavier than people think. 2700 for an early Vega and almost 3000 for a later one with the big bumpers sounds about right to me.
At the other end of the spectrum, a tube chassis race car with fiberglass front end, doors and hatch, lexan windows, aluminum interior and an aluminum headed SBC can be under 2000lbs., especially if it's a chrome-moly chassis. My drag car has a mild steel round tube chassis, and is somewhere just south of 2100.

Weighed mine with a half tank of gas. Came to 2668 lbs. with the original wheels, four cylinder, automatic, and big bumpers.
I took myself out of the equation.

I junked a '73 GT years ago. No drive train, hood or hatch. It weighed around 1200 pounds stripped down like that.

Thanks for the input guys.
I still need to get back to the track and see how it goes without having to slam on the brakes so i don't get kicked out. (hoping this month)
Would like to put it on dyno again too. The 5000 stall makes the graphs go all funky.

Forgot to mention the car was weighed with a mostly full 15lb NX nitrous bottle in it. That's an extra 30lbs +/- in the car
