Door Lock Mechanism

Postby twzorek » Sun Jul 03, 2016 2:59 am

I'm trying to find a new door latch mechanism for my '75 Monza 2+2. The one on the passenger side won't actually close and lock around the latch. If you take a screw driver and force it to clamp down, it will move into the lock position however it releases right away. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

etwzorek can you get at your mechanism from inside the door and blast the S :censored: T out of it with some cleaner [WD-40 or Kerosene, etc.] and maybe a brush. It sounds like the mechanism is gummed up or maybe even broken. Age would lead me to think that it is just gummed up or rusted, that is a sort-of wet zone, depending on the condition of the outer window sweeps. Please report back to us we will have more idea's and parts if it comes to that. I would like to welcome you to the board as this was your first post! And now you have that first post out of way, you can add your location [sometimes the board will not accept your location right away I had to add mine twice], we are all over the world and someone may be right around the corner, and that may be even more helpful to both of you! Harry [P.S. I do have a spare latch or maybe two]

Thanks for the warm welcome Harry. I tried cleaning it from the outside with a combination of Wd-40 and P'Blaster, but ill give cleaning it from the inside a shot when I can make it out to the car tomorrow evening (It's at my grandparents' house so I don't have immediate access to it). I know that the car sat in their back yard for longer than I've been alive (Since 92), so I'm hoping cleaning it will work. I'll let you know how that goes come tomorrow.

I did a little more than spray it down and brush it off. I took the whole mechanism off the door and there wasn't a spot on the thing that wasn't gummed up. I shot it down with brake cleaner and wiped it with the rag. It worked like a charm. It looks, and works like it's 20 years younger. Thanks for the help.
