Flap in the fuel filler neck

Postby OldsStarfire » Fri Jul 29, 2016 9:32 pm

This Starfire has a flap in the fuel filler neck that is not allowing the fuel in. Whats the best way to remove it?

That flap was originally installed to prevent regular leaded fuel from being installed. Those pumps had a larger filler pipe. It was also illegal at the time to remove that flap but I don't think anyone cares any more. However, you should be able to pump fuel into it without issue. The filler pipe should go past that flap, sounds like you may have a venting issue.... not sure the best way to remove it, you may have to remove the filler pipe from the tank to keep from dropping the flap in the tank. It is fairly easy to remove without messing with the tank....

There are 2 types of filler necks, one has it integrated with the top part of the neck. The other has a plate that fits in a groove in the neck. The second style you can take the neck out and use a screw-driver or something to push it out. The first one I couldn't find a way to remove short of torching it out.

What earlier one do you use for Monza, Skyhawk and Starfire since they never came with one without a flap? In 75 they all had the unleaded only flap.

If you use this method, be sure to remove the filler neck from the tank.

10 - 4 on that good buddy! :th:

I always used the one with the plate that could be bent and punched out. - Again with the neck removed from the car/tank.

I peeled that thing out of my '76 Monza a long time ago (about '79). Didn't have to take the filler neck out. Still never took gas fast (and still doesn't). And I've had the tank out to rip out the failed stock fuel pump and add a Holley "red" 40gph outside the tank. I think the bend at the bottom of the pipe just creates too much back-pressure for the modern nozzles. Too sensitive...

This one was the type further down the neck. I ended up disabling it in the open position. The one with the flap near the top should be easy to depress with the gas pump nozzle, but here in SE PA they use short nozzles with vapor return lines. Here are pics of both types.
