Jaguar XK120 replica

Postby spencerforhire » Thu Sep 22, 2016 4:12 pm

What does this car have to do with H-bodies? Drivetrain, that's what; 3.8 Buick V6 with the T-50 trans and 7.5" rear.
I ran across it today at a higher end used car place; the sales manager knew I was a "Vega guy" and couldn't wait to show me the Monza drivetrain. I had walked by it and thought it was the real deal, not a replica.

Looks like one of the bidders may be a shill bidder trying to drive up the price.

Anytime you see bidders with (0) feedback, you know it's a fresh account either created for the sole purpose of driving the price up, or just some a$$hole who has no intentions of actually buying it.

To digress a little further from a true H-body discussion, and since this site is not overloaded with posts of late, I have an XK120 story! When I was young and growing up near Cannonsburg, PA (Yenko Chevrolet home). There was a body shop on Rt 19 named Maer's Collision. This was about 1959-60. Donnie Maers had an XK120 coupe that he put a 322 Buick nailhead in. Used a LaSalle 3 speed transmission. Engine had 6 carbs on an Edelbrock manifold. Cam and all the other hot rod stuff.

Anyway, he demonstrated it one night in front of the body shop. All that could be seen was smoke from the tires. Big deal in those days especially to a young guy!

"Foreign Cars" were rare - especially in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been a lot of action on this ebay listing; As of 8:00am, It's stuck at $9,900; the selled told me he was expecting it to go for $30 -40k.

Winning bid of $11,000; it met reserve, but just didn't go for anywhere near what I thought it would. Buyer is from France; seller is not holding his breath and half expects the sale not to go through.

Did you notice the fit of the drivers door or the condition of the engine? Someone literally plucked the drive train out of a Monza and dropped it in without even cleaning it or detailing it! :bang: The new owner can expect a lot of pain and disappointment.

The car was built around 1980; not a "kit car" from someone's back yard, but a turn-key replica from a small manufacturer. I agree that the door gaps and general fit & finish are not up to original Jaguar standards. There are some actual OEM parts on the thing that appear to have been added over the years; the tail lights and windshield frame are heavily pitted original XK120 pieces that are in bad need of re-chroming. Steering wheel also is an original, and looks 60+ years old. I'm not sure what one of the previous owners(it's had 3 or 4) was trying to accomplish by bolting on badly deteriorated real parts on a replica.
Still kind of a neat car, and interesting to me mostly because of the H-body drivetrain.
