hahaha you guys crack me up... clue me in just how much cutting is involved to put a v8 in a vega ? you make it sound like you couldn't go back.. Anyways I too would like to say thanks to Dennis for his behind the scenes work to keep this place going, as Harry said if there's ways people can help feel free to ask :th: I really do love this site I just hate how it seems to get so quiet at times :?

It is possible to do a V8 swap with no cutting and all GM pieces, especially in the later "big trans tunnel" cars; I've done a couple like that.
And I may have to give old vegavair bob a second chance; he just shared a piece about Jeff Schwartz' 5.3 LS powered Flying Turd.

it seems that in the last week or so, Bob has been responsible for about 50% of the content posted on the Facebook Vega Nation page. I'm pleasantly surprised that quite a bit of it is NOT "purist" in nature. There actually have been some Pro Street cars!

He's on a rant this morning regarding the handling, build quality, engineering, of the Vega. I've tried to remain respectful of his opinions, but he is so far from right it's nuts. Anyone who thinks that a Vega had no faults when new is kidding themselves.

While I appreciate his positive outlook towards the Vega overall, I sure do think there isn't anyone who can honestly say ANY new car was/is perfect.

While he may be a bit misguided, or too enthusiastic, I enjoy the praise the Vega gets when he's posting. He's brought a lot of attention to the little car. I absolutely LOVE the millionth. The underlying (and not so underlying) self-worthiness can sometimes annoy (only because of past experiences seen here on this forum).

In my humble opinion...... GO VEGA!!!!

I think you are being reasonably fair to him Dwight, as I wouldn't have anything much, if at all different to say on the subject we know as Bob Spinello, AKA VegaVair Bob! Faithful H-Body guy with a mountain of knowledge and an OVERZEALOUS ENTHUSIASM with a "hint" of his own personal tunnel vision! Harry

This morning there was a little drama when his comments about the Vega out-handling all the other small cars, import and otherwise. He was taken to task by a Datsun 510 guy. Having driven both cars, I have to give the advantage to the IRS equipped 510.
Edit: The 510 also had an advantage in a straight line as well; in 1973, my Grandmother's (yes, really) automatic 510 would spank a Corolla SR5 In the quarter. And yes, that was with me behind the wheel, not Nana. :D

The Datsun 510 guy was me. I never owned one, but always liked them. :) Like I said, I was there for a a lot of SS racing, and know what I saw. I owned a Vega, autocrossed a Vega, and wanted to see a Vega win every SS race I watched. It didn't happen. The Vega's did well, as did the Monza's later on, but they didn't run away from the pack, not ever. I took auto-x damned seriously. The custom alignment, Koni shocks, "R" compound tires, a 6 point roll bar, and every engine trick I could legally squeeze out of that ugly little 2300. I didn't half ass it, and that's probably why I get hot under the collar when debating with him. My Vega was probably as well set up as any that ever ran in H/Stock, and won a lot, but equally prepared BMW's, 510's, and later Honda Civics gave me all I wanted.

So you actually were trying to troll Bob; shame on you. It's only a matter of time before someone gets under his skin and then we can sit back and watch the fireworks.

I never actually said I owned one, I just took issue with his "all Jap cars were ugly and handled like $#!t, back then" comment. I ran against those cars, and he is wrong. He obviously never autocrossed a first gen Vega, or he would have a better understanding of what I meant about needing to be on a smooth surface. Wheel hop was awful in those cars, and not just on a launch. A little "washboard" pavement, and they would swap ends in a corner. I'll give him a pass on his other opinions, but the handling of these cars is something I learned about the hard way.
