An Idea about updating the FAQ section...

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Thu Oct 20, 2016 9:19 am

I have an idea but no time to type it out it. Simply it involves a new FAQ section...the thread titles would be the questions, and we discuss the answers in the replies for all to browse. This would help perk up board traffic, and have a new area to express idea's in a more organized searchable way for newbies.

I think the thought from everyone reading this is....."well, ok, make it and we'll post"....

And thats where I'll need Denis to help, I can't change this message board like that.

If people don't like the idea of the FAQ here, in message board format.... the information gleaned could be transferred to a new web page.

It certainly puts "the question" right out in front of everyone, I agree. I haven't tried it extensively yet, but I thought we could fairly easily search on questions on this site, whether it be the entire site, or just in a particular forum topic. Either way, it seems like a good idea, but the questions are as far and as wide as the universe, so the task of narrowing "similar" questions down into the most common denominator and then categorizing them is no small task.

Sounds like a good idea; sometimes I find the search function on this board is to use a polite word "difficult". Usually I mumble other words while trying to find a specific thread.
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

I agree wholeheartedly with Ken and Spencer, Marco, and I too think it is a good idea, I just don't know the best way to implement this. To quote Ken this is no small feat and like Spencer stated the search function is only a "part time device" at best with this board. Harry

So, you'd have one thread per question? People would post over time to provide updated info? That could work. It would need manual "curating" to keep it manageable.

Also, about the search, I've struggled with that. phpBB has its own built-in search that works well BUT it hogs so many server resources that it got us kicked off a host! So that's why we (Colin and I) went to a Google-based search. Unfortunately, that search didn't seem to index ALL of the board messages. I'm at a loss on this one. One thing you can try is that just about any search engine has an option to limit the search to a certain host--in this case "forums.h-body.org". So on Google's regular web page you'd type your search and add "site:forums.h-body.org". You could try a site-specific search on a different search engine...?
