removing marks on windshield

Postby chevyart » Tue Nov 29, 2016 5:36 pm

when i got my vega it had scuff marks on both sides of the windshield from the arc of the wiper blades. its not scratched, just kind of a dull marking where wipers run. anyone know of a way to remove these marks without hurting the rest of the windshield. someone told me toothpaste would do it. any suggestions welcome. thanks art

Hi Art,
I think it is called jewelers rouge and you buff the glass with it.
It will distort the glass if you buff too long in one spot.
Some high end glass shops will do it for you.
Good luck,

There are windshield polishing kits available, generally if you can't catch a fingernail in you can buff it out. http://www.eastwood.com/glass-polishing ... gQod27MEjw
I have also heard you can try tooth paste.....

I did run across the "polishing kit" you mentioned Clyde but I don't remember where. :bang: :cuss: . I'd try "Eastwood", and a "Yahoo/Google" search. I tried the toothpaste thing years ago to lessen a big scratch and some minor ones it didn't do much on its own, not abrasive enough, toothpaste was already lessened on the abrasive by the mid-eighty's but continually adding Baking soda helped, but this is a mild, mild abrasive and wears out fast. I didn't try the rough but that would likely lessen the big ones then something a tad less abrasive to finish I would think. Harry P.S. It was Eastwood, Art here is a link: http://search.eastwood.com/search?w=gla ... hing%20kit

I used a kit I had bought from JC Whitney two decades ago, it came with a drill-mounted polishing wheel and some soft powdered glass polish you add water to (similar to gritty toothpaste when made wet). It actually worked pretty well but you need to be very patient, it's a slooow process. On a parts car, i had a deep wiper arc (scratch) mark on a sunbird windshield (probably caused by running the wipers many times without the rubber blade) and I wanted to see if it could be taken out. The scratch was easily felt with a fingernail at first, and after about 4 hours of polishing it was almost invisible, but I ran out of patience... that was with factory glass though, not the thinner aftermarket replacements.

you mix cerium oxide w/water into a paste and buff with a small 3" hard wool pad on a drill or buffer. It takes some time. You can buff distortions into the glass if you work one spot to long.

hey shovel : im afraid of falling asleep at the wheel. im going to try toothpaste with tarter control just to see if it cleans the glass a little, if not, it will have to go to a glass shop(my friends shop) and see what he can do. i would rather do it myself though. thanks art
