Vega marker lamps

Postby cjbiagi » Sat Mar 18, 2017 10:12 am

I am restoring some Vega front and rear side marker lamps. I know for awhile GM listed a separate RH & LH side for the markers and had two different part numbers. Later on they listed just one number for both sides. Obviously the little drain hole needs to be facing the bottom and the back of the housings have a small tab that matches a cut out in the body I assume. My question is, can the markers actually be installed on either side of the car and is there actually a groove in the body that the tab fits in? I don't want to offer these without knowing how they are going to fit and am confused why initially there were two different numbers LH and RH side and then later on there was only one number for both sides? I assume the little tab could just be removed if it was a issue, I am just trying to get a better understanding if anyone can clear this up for me.

Both my 72 and 77 Vega's have notches in the fender for the marker lamps.

My 73 vega front side marker lights do have notches but they could be ground off to then go on either side I do believe, don't know about the rears but suspect they are the same and could be modified.

I know there are notches, I guess my question is are the markers interchangeable right to left or do they require a specific LH and RH marker. I guess the tabs could just be removed if there was a issue since they screw on anyway.

Screw holes are symmetrical, so yes, if you grind off the plastic tab they are interchangeable side to side. If you are "restoring" them, you could also grind off the "LH" and RH" markings as well. No one would know there's supposes to be two different ones.

Actually these don't have any LH or RH markings on them. I guess that just adds to the confusion. I just don't want to sell them as a pair and then have someone complain one won't fit because of the tab.

The notches are there so that the marker lights are not swappable from left to right or vice versa.

Clyde, On My 77 Astre they have 2 separate P/n's left and right, I also have a NOS left and right front with the same P/N's. But my 78 Sunbird Safari has just 1 P/N Lt & Right. I suspect the changeover was either late 77 or the 1978 Model year for the Vega bodies cars. I don't know if that helps you or not.
