Broke an Axle

Postby kenimpzoom » Wed Apr 12, 2017 10:34 pm

Well it finally happend...broke the axle on the 7.5 26 spline stock rearend with a mini spool.

Here is the in car camera. https://youtu.be/29rzVZBH4Fw

For the record I was running mid 12s in the 1/4 mile. Probably around 350 HP. Had Cooper Cobra tires (not slicks or drag radials)

Got around 10-12 passes in the last 12 months, and this time the track was super sticky. :D

same thing happened to guy who tubbed out my 67 nova drag car. 70 monte carlo running in 10s with BB chev engine and stock 12 bolt with the stock axles and c-clips. tire went down track ahead of him. luckily no damage to his quarter panel. he even predicted it would happen if he didnt put un aftermarket axles(which he had right on his bench). i label him stupid because he was in that business and should have known better. art

Only. twisted the splines slightly on one of mine's once after 30 years of hard use with a minispool . Sorry for your mishap, hope the damage wasn't too bad , got spares? I read here guys have gone 10's on stock axles.

if he has spares he should give them away to a street guy and buy some aftermarket ones. 10 times stronger that the old technology steel. he still has the c-clip system, but with new axles he should be very safe against this happening again. if you run in the 10s in NHRA you need aftermarket axles and hardened, long. studs. besides you being safer, you must make the guy next to you safe also. art

I got new 28 spline Moser axles for an S-10, new brake drums, new 28 spline mini-spool. Now have to find new 5 lug wheels.

When I did the 5 lug conversion I opted to get Moser replacement axles vs stock GM's. Even though they are replacement street axles they are still supposedly quite a bit stronger. They weren't that expensive either.....

Crap... the 28 spline axles wont fit through the 26 spline 7.5" carier. Guess I gotta upgrade that too.
