Any other options besides paying someone to refurb it?

Other than having Tri Star rebuild it, which they do a great job. I think Dorman sells a sending unit. Could have sworn I have seen one on ebay or some other site.

I understand so completely, but after as much as you will invest, even trimming the "Fat" from the budget, you will still have a tidy lump in your "Baby" and if you are dead on the side of the road out of gas with your "economical" repair letting you down, you will be hurting your leg and your A$$ from kicking yourself for saving what will feel like pennies when you could be having fun! Just something to consider, my daily driver was having gas gauge issues and I wasn't ready to pony up the loot to fix it, well at 2:30 AM I ran out of gas and had to walk home [God Loved me that day I was only 2 blocks away] but it cost me a tow and paying someone to change it [plus they only install premium ones so he doesn't have any "comebacks"] as I needed it for work in a few hours. My point being, saving that $200 cost me about $500. Keep the posts coming. Harry

Potential options:
The resistor unit can be replaced, most 70's-80s GM vehicles use a 0-90 ohm resistance.

If you're creative, you could also adapt an aftermarket resistor to the stock sender

It's been said that the 3rd generation Camaros use the same sender:
