Overkill?

Postby Greybeard » Wed Jun 14, 2017 12:17 pm

I've left my Vega alone for a couple years. The engine block is World Products, as are the heads and intake manifold. 11-1 Compression with 243* intake X 248*exhaust, 108* lca HR cam with conical valves springs. Nasty little sucker with great punch. I'm pretty comfortable with carbs having been playing with them for close to 60 years. The drawback to this one is I need to drill a hole in the primary butterflies as the transision slots are completely uncovered and it runs rich at idle as a result. I've been to lazy to pull it and fix it and it is a tad rich @ idle. It pulls hard however.
I got a wild hair last month and started pushing buttons on ebay, summit, and others. I've wanted to try EFI for a while. My experience with them has been just trouble shooting oem systems with stock engines, and mechanical FI back in the 60s and 70s. Anyhoo, got myself wound up over the fitech systems. Having an STR-10 intake manifold on the shelf for years, I desided to go out on a limb knowing full well that Xs two is four times the trouble.
Right now I'm cutting out the spare tire well and redoing the floor so I can install a '69 Camaro tank by "Tanks" set up for an internal fuel pump. The pump is by fitech and has a built in pressure regulator so I can run a dead head system.

Looks cool, how it works out? I just bought a '70 Z28 with a healthy 406 that I want to EFI for the same reasons, looking forward to your results.

Sounds like a really cool idea, I saw it done once with ez efi and I think it worked great. With some fitech units you can even do ignition control, it would be worth checking out if you can. Also if your heads have large ports or been opened up prepare to do some welding on the intake to add some meat to the runners. I am running the same manifold, my heads are ported for felpro 1206's and the intake runners sat inside the head runner port.

Badbowtie: I read your build so I was aware of the port issue, and that is the first thing I'll check when I start the change over. This fitech unit has fuel pump control, and can be programed to reduce the duty cycle of the pump for idle and cruise, so it doesn't run full power all the time. It has timing control if you want to use it, and it has fan control as well. Lots of places for a guy to screw up.
