May Need Gas Tank for My 78 Sunbird Coupe??

Postby EagleFish » Wed Nov 08, 2017 1:55 pm

Hey, guys,

I just took my gas tank into a shop for cleaning and lining. I have pin hole leaks that need to be soldered. Anyone know where I can buy a new or good used tank? How much?

Thanks, John

Probably the correct choice, I do not believe new tanks are available, and its a roll of the dice on a used tank. And with the EPA laws being enforced in most states now, the salvage yards have to empty all the fluids before a car is set out to be used for parts, for gas tanks they just drill or punch at least 1 hole in them to drain the gas. About 4 years ago I found a 74 Vega in a yard that looked like it had a new tank installed shortly before the owner stopped driving it, the rest of the car was rotted out but the tank was shiny and new looking, Exept it had 3 huge dents where they used an air hammer to puncture the tank and drain the gas!!!!!!

John, I have a 74 Vega fuel tank that I do not need should you decide not to repair yours. This one has no leaks, but will need to be cleaned out and coated inside.

Just solder the holes and coat with the kit from POR-15.I did this a few years ago and it worked great!

Thanks guys. Yeah the shop who is cleaning and lining it are repairing the pin holes. It didn't look like it was leaking or maybe a teeny bit. Anyway, I will have $285.00 in it when done.

I just pulled one from a 78 wasn't leaking but it sure is rusty. $20 if anyone want's it. Pick up only, it's sitting outside, get it before it rusts away or disappears! (4cyl - no fuel pump/sender only)
