I asked Speedway if they offered steering arm in the 6-1/4 length but they do not. I wonder if their forged arms can be welded an redrilled to the correct length? I'm mocking up my car with S-10 on one side and stock on the other to try and figure this out.

Kenova used the 5.75" A-body arms.
Welding on steering parts is not advised.
Using the 3 piece spindles gives you the option to change the arm length later if you wish.
Original factory manual steering A-body arms were longer but the reproductions list the 5.75" arms for both manual and power.

So I've got stock on the right side and S-10 Spindles & ball joints on the left. I can see that the steering will be a little slower due to the slightly longer steering arm on the spindle, but if I modify the travel limiter brackets on the lower control arms I can't see that the amount of travel and therefore the turning radius would have to change. Am I missing something?

Most people use stock S10 spindles and remove the stops, the turning radius does not change much but the response gets slower. Autocross racers seek the faster response and tighter radius so shorter arms and rack and pinion are popular mods with them.

That makes sense. I'll remove the stops and mount my wheels and tires and see how it all works.

Personally, I think I just might go through the hassle of modifying all 4 control arms to accept the early A-body ball joints so I could use the spindle with the bolt-on steering arm. Even with the hybrid Speedway S-10 spindle that takes the bolt-on arm, I would still end up modifying at least the upper if not all 4 in order to correct the alignment issues. Not that I'm planning an all out Pro Touring car, I just want something than will handle well.

Alignment I can fix with ball joint placement, but I am most concerned with slow steering response. I do have a Chevette power steering rack I may install, and I suspect I will need the shortest steering arms I can get. The Chevette rack was at one time installed in a street rod with a, S-10 front clip, and the steering response was terrible.

My sentiments exactly! Why modify your car and not make it faster (corners count too!)?

Hi guys,

If I undestood correct, speedway spindle is stock height, no drop. To faster steering, would powersteering be faster?

LS Notch Power won't be any faster per se it will depend on which ratio it is 12.7 in modern boxes are available in power assist Back when these were new I believe 14.7:1 was the fast one 6 Cyl. and SS/Z28's standard was 16:1 now I'm talking Camaro/Nova etc. I don't remember different ones for the H-Bodies [doesn't mean they weren't available just that I don't remember any] If you need faster and You're doing the speedway knuckles just choose the shorter arm to quicken it up but that may come at a price "Bump Steer" you'll have to watch/calculate your outcome. cjbiagi [http://forums.h-body.org/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=5] "Clyde" had his box rebuilt with a quick ratio and changed the feel to more of his liking. There are a few choices, search here and you will come up with a few. Harry
