I sent my 1975 Vega sending unit to Tri-Star Radiator, they cut off the old float and old round rheostat. Welded a newer style float and straight rheostat onto my original sending unit, and I also sent them a new fuel pump and sock I bought off eBay to have them install and test before returning it to me. They also painted the sending unit internal parts with epoxy paint to protect them from rusting. Total cost plus shipping was 75.00 and it was well worth it. The fuel gauge works perfectly, and the fuel pump works great too.
While I was at it, I sent my fuel tank to a radiator shop in Kansas City, I had it cleaned out from the scale that was in it, and used redline tank liner in the inside of the tank to rust proof it. When I got it back it was spanking clean and I repainted the tank and then painted the exterior with rubber undercoating to help protect the tank from road debris. I used 30 LB roofing felt strips to protect the tank where the straps mount under the tank. Total cost for tank was 75.00
