Wagon Gas Tank?

Postby djss » Thu Apr 05, 2018 9:12 pm

I just purchased my first Vega, it is a 1971 wagon. I need a gas tank. I've bought repo tanks for other old cars without any problem. I never dreamed I wouldn't be able to find one for a Vega but I'm not having any luck. Does anyone make a repo tank? I also need a sending unit.

Thanks

The Vega is a low density vehicle (in other words: not super popular), so there isn't much as far as aftermarket parts for them. Even more bad news, the 71 Vega fuel tank was specific to that year. They don't interchange with any other car or year. They do interchange will all Vega models of that year (that is you can use a tank from a hatchback or notchback in your wagon as they are the same for that year) . If you can find a tank, it will probably be a bit rough. There are places that can repair even the most rusty of tanks and I know of a couple places that will rebuild the sending units. Not going to be cheap though.

I would recommend holding out as I am sure you can find one. Don't cut up the car to make some other tank work. If you must, I have seen folks convert gas cans to temporary tanks just to get around until they found a more permanent solution.

The 72/73 tank is close, but I have heard you have to do some modification to the car or the tank to make it fit. 71 had a different style venting system than the 72/73.

this guy is cutting up his 71 wagon. Ask him if he has the tank.

I sacrificed the tire well and installed a '69 Camaro tank. So happy I did. Bigger in this case, is better.

My tank is in great shape except for the hole I accidentally knocked in it. I am thinking about just welding it up.

i just figured repo tanks where available. I bought one for my 60 impala cheap and it only fits a 60.
