The Vega is a low density vehicle (in other words: not super popular), so there isn't much as far as aftermarket parts for them. Even more bad news, the 71 Vega fuel tank was specific to that year. They don't interchange with any other car or year. They do interchange will all Vega models of that year (that is you can use a tank from a hatchback or notchback in your wagon as they are the same for that year) . If you can find a tank, it will probably be a bit rough. There are places that can repair even the most rusty of tanks and I know of a couple places that will rebuild the sending units. Not going to be cheap though.
I would recommend holding out as I am sure you can find one. Don't cut up the car to make some other tank work. If you must, I have seen folks convert gas cans to temporary tanks just to get around until they found a more permanent solution.
