4x4 Vega wagon ideas?

Postby marcusmckenna79 » Sun Oct 14, 2018 7:16 pm

Hello all, I'm new. I registered to get some ideas for a 73 wagon I have. I want to turn it into a 4x4 with a vortec engine and adjustable suspension so I can swap out street wheels for offroad wheels. I wanna use it to tour North/South America so it has to be able to pull a trailer. Are there any popular frames people use to do stuff like this?

Edit: So I've been searching and searching and the only thing online I've found is a post on these forums from 2007. I'm starting to think 4x4 Vegas are a rarity so I just searched what vehicles have a 97" wheelbase and the closest I can find is a 2007-2017 Jeep Wrangler. I'm gonna give it a shot and see how it works. Will keep you posted.

Not sure about how to do that, I am sure it has been done so hopefully someone will chime in. Since H bodies are unibody cars with no separate frame you are in for a ton of fab work. There is no frame to unbolt or swap so it's pretty much all one off fabrication.

I have seen something like this before. It was quite some time ago but I believe someone used a Jeep chassis and mounted the Vega body with modifications to bolt the two together. I guess I would check to see what 4X4 chassis has a wheelbase close to the 97" wheelbase of the Vega.

I looked up the wheelbase of the 2 Door S10 Blazer and it is a couple of inches longer [100.5"] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_S-10_Blazer than the Vega's 97" wheel base https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Vega That will be the closest GM version reportedly the S10 Blazer is a few inches longer than the Bronco II [Please don't do that]
The S10 line has been long lived and there should be plenty of new and used parts/donors available. Now wheelbase alone will not tell the story you will need to hit a "Bone Yard" with a tape measure and figure out engine placement with regards to wheel placement to make sure you will not need to move the firewall or Rad cradle etc. Keep us in the loop Please and Good Luck, sounds like a "Crazy Cool" adventure! And like Clyde posted saw/grinder and a welder will need to be your friends! Harry

They make kits to shorten or legthen S10 frames. Not sure I would use the S10 4x4 system though.
