Monza Calipers

Postby Biscayne John » Thu Feb 07, 2019 1:29 pm

Now that the 13" raised white letter tires have been reproduced I decided to get my Mirage road worthy, I have the brake/fuel line kit from In Line Tube and it is SPECTACULAR! I had some calipers I ordered for my Cosworth a few years ago and PRESUMED that they would be the same, well I was wrong! I tried everywhere and seem to have struck out. I want to get the car on the road in the next 10 days for the AACA Winter Meet here in Ocala Florida, I am looking for a set of rebuilt ready to go. Any leads would be appreciated. I have kits and will rebuild them my self, but the bleeders seem to be frozen, they are soaking now, but never had much luck with frozen bleeders.

I have had and have a lot of antique cars, and these H Body cars are harder to find hard mechanical parts for then a Chevy from the 20's and early 30's. You would never think that they made millions of them on 40 some odd years ago.

I have been away from the site for awhile due to some health and family issues, good to be back! The help and information I had gotten on this site has been phenomenal!

Have you tried the candle wax trick before? It's worked great for the rusted stuff I've had issues with, never tried on a bleeder though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aivMjkXgKZ8

John,
Do you have ventilated rotors or the stock unventilated that came on the Cosworth originally?
The vented would be a previous owner update if you did not change them. Monza's 1976 and later had ventilated rotors.

John heat (the bleeder only if possible) let cool, using the lube down the hole [make sure it isn't plugged with rust, drill out gently if it is] wash, rinse, repeat, probably many times. Buy a "Left hand drill bit" [that means it turns counter clockwise] slightly smaller than the tap drill for the bleeder screw, once past the threads, the combination of heat reduction of pressure [on the threads from the swelling effect of the rust] and the torque she'll likely come screaming out. Let us know if you need more help than this and I can talk you through it. Harry https://https://www.mcmaster.com/2876a25 I seem to remember these being 5/16-24 (NF) threads if that is the case this would be a good choice about0.030" total or 0.015" per side, you will need to be accurate. If it is 3/8-24 (NF) then a 9/32 would be good.https://www.mcmaster.com/2876a28

Hey John! I just checked Rock Auto, and O'Reilly's and they both list them for 1977 Monza, did you check the usual suspects? Harry

Yes they do, then when you order them it then says "temporarily unavailable"

Sorry for misreading your post, I read Mirage, looked at your signature picture and my mind said Cosworth! Of course being a '77 Monza it has ventilated.

Autozone does the same - appears like you can ship them to home in under a week, until you go to checkout - then you get the out-of-stock message!

I found I had a second set that were in a Mirage parts car I bought from the site so I had some spares and gave the rebuild a shot with the help of a friend.

Glad you found a way around your problem, the parts are drying up after 40+ years.

Yes they are, my frustration on this has been split between getting the wrong parts and counter people that have no clue of what any part does. I wasted a few hours on Friday looking for a pipe fitting to make the wrong rebuilt master cylinder I purchased a few years ago, and when I ask for the fitting the question I get asked by the counter person is " four door or two door"

I am fairly active in the AACA, and I had this Mirage at a Meet in Naples Florida a few years ago and it was a HUGE attention getter, even was featured in the AACA Magazine. The Southeast Winter Meet is about give or take 3 miles from my home in Ocala. It is pretty much untouched and original unrestored. My goal was to have everything done and for the meet. Now I am waiting for the FedEx with my master cylinder rebuild kit and I should be good to go. (if the correct kit arrives!) A $10 kit and $58 to overnight it, so I am hoping, but at this point everything is out my control
